To ask how to stop yourself from crying

Just that really. Does anyone have any tips to halt tears? I can't be the only one who sometimes gets overwhelmed and can't stop tears flowing involuntarily in public. Distract myself mentally, pinch myself, tongue roof of mouth, please share any discreet tips you have!!

My friend's counsellor told her to count down from 100 but in sevens. So 100, 93, 86, 79 etc.
It really worked for her. And me!

Thank you, this kind of thing was exactly what I'm looking for

And this, I've tried counting down in ones but this might be the trick

I also find tilting my head and looking upwards helpful, also keeping my eyes really wide open without blinking. I didn't used to be a crier but I am now! I'm not depressed I just have very excitable tear ducts

This used to work, like it would drain the tears away if I could catch it before it got too much

What is it that triggers your tears??

You sound just like me. I cry at all sorts of silly things. I feel so sad for other people (real or fictional) when something bad happens to them. I've got a chronic illness though so don't have many spare 'spoons' IYKWIM.

I would, however, like to make it clear that I have never cried in the Sistine Chapel!

My advice is to pinch the skin between your thumb and pointer finger whenever you feel you're about to cry. This really helps me.

Thank you to PP for the other tips too,

Thank you for that, I don't have a chronic illness but I do feel my problem is a lack of spoons, sometimes I'm crying because I'm out of ideas of trying to obtain more spoons, I should have plenty

What is it that triggers your tears??

Lots of things, usually grief of various kinds, the trigger will be something relatively random (or not) but then the feeling comes like a crashing wave. I wonder how on earth people can possibly go about their everyday business, my grief is the sort that comes to us all, we all deal with these things. And I am a dealing functional adult. I just have leaky eyes as a pp said

OP, I’m a crier. I cry at pretty much everything. I can make myself cry just by thinking about certain things. I take a deep breath and just think of something else.

Have your hormones been checked / tested? Are you taking any hormones / have you stopped or changed?

When they moved me from Depo Provera intramuscular injections, to subcutaneous - in addition to other issues, I could just cry on demand. It’s so out of character for me. It turned out the dosing is ever so slightly different, we switched me back & I’ve not had that issue since. Personally I wouldn’t go on anti-depressants until you’ve ruled out hormonal influence. I’m not medical though, this is just based on my experience.

I cry quite easily but went through a period where it was really debilitating in that I was unable to deal with a difficult personal situation without being being very tearful - to my disadvantage as I elicited plenty of sympathy but felt unable to get the answers I needed. Looking back I think it was highly likely hormone changes on top of the stressful situation contributed. Depending on your age/ biology you might find HRT could help - it certainly helped me!
