To feel fobbed off? Women’s health isn’t taken seriously!

Went to an endocrinology second opinion today with a consultant, for the following symptoms

  • persistent bloating
  • Oily bad skin and hair
  • Hair doesn’t grow and eyebrows don’t grow
  • Tired all the time
  • Very very thirsty when I wake up / always dehydrated
  • History of polycystic ovaries and raised testosterone levels
  • Thyroid range is apparently normal.

The conversation literally went like this

“Do you get irregular periods or hair growth?”
“Not really, some hairs under my chin”
“Then there’s nothing we can do for you”

So I asked how the rest of my symptoms wouldn’t be hormonal. He just said relieve stress…

I asked him is there a link between PCOS and insulin control (I know there is). I have excessive thirst and I get very dizzy/weak when hungry but tested negative for diabetes.
He said I’m probably just a thirsty person …

He then offered the pill which is the answer to everything lol. I said I’ve been on the pill most of my adult life and it doesn’t help.

Does this sound normal, I feel pretty fobbed off

Can anyone help advise what I should do next?

Sadly, it sounds normal in terms of the standard of care women get. That doesn’t make it right. I’m currently experiencing all sorts of issues myself, and have finally seen a dr after close to two years of thinking it just wasn’t worth it as I’ll be fobbed off.

I don’t have any answers for you, I just wanted to say I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. I hope you can get some answers, I guess you have to keep going back to your GP and pushing.

What did the first opinion say?

What tests have you had?

Bagsintheboot · 28/10/2025 13:20

This is a consultant, so you've already been referred by a GP?

Is this private or NHS?

What did the first consultant say?

What tests have been done so far?

Have you got a diary / log of your symptoms, and notes from both consultant appointments? If not I'd write those down ASAP.

FullOfMomsense · 28/10/2025 13:22

What is your TSH level? NHS boundaries are shite.

Rainbows41 · 28/10/2025 17:16

How old are you OP?

MyLimeGuide · 28/10/2025 17:18

Take some vitamins, get out, do stuff.

Do your research. Decide what you want - tests etc and tell consultant.

It seems the attitude was that you have a diagnosis therefore thats it

Depending on your age id look at menopause symptoms too

So if this was the second opinion, what was the outcome of the consultation with the first consultant?

ToffeePennie · 28/10/2025 18:10

I have a complaint going through because of a lack of care. I have now been bleeding since June 2023 and apparently my anaemia and tiredness and putting on weight etc is not my thyroid but just a failing. Because I’m fat and female.
it’s ridiculous. The obvious answer is to give me a bloody hysterectomy but all I get is “you’re too young”

Do what "stuff"?

Are you the consultant in question because, however well meaning, this isn’t great advice.

Rainbows41 · 28/10/2025 20:18

What's your diet like?
Can you tell me what you ate and drank today for example?
