To think most people only care about injustice when it affects someone they like?

We act shocked when injustice happens to our friends but stay silent when it happens to someone “difficult.” So do we care about justice or likeability?

I don't know about " most" people but in my experience a lot of people are only interested in themselves, their family and their friends. And are very cliquish.

But fortunately there are also a good number of people who believe in justice in it's own right and would advocate for anyone's right to it regardless of whether they know them or like them.

I like people generally so why would I not feel empathy?

Garamousalata · 28/10/2025 10:12

I hate injustice of any sort.

I don't agree.
I think a lot of people care about fairness.

What I do think is that sometimes people don't think or care about something until it does happen to someone they know and like. So maybe going along quite breezily thinking the NHS is fine, but then ending up spending 46 hours in A&E with their mum makes them a bit more vocal.

All you have to do is look back on here when Ian Watkins was killed. People falling over themselves to congratulate the murderers, because Watkins was a abhorrent piece of shit, Never mind what the murderers were actually in prison for, or the larger implications for staff and other prisoners.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

@SerendipityJane The only issue with that quote it assumes those groups would speak out to protect other groups.

Many groups are happy for those they consider 'other' to be persecuted - they would not be speaking for 'me' whether they were there or not.

As a general rule, we all care most about causes that personally impact us.

You couldn't function any another way. If you were torn up by all injustice you'd be in a permanent catatonic state.
