What to give kids for Halloween?

I recently moved into my first house after years of living in flats so this will be the first time I will be doing this and just wanted some advice and thoughts from others.

Do you just hand out wrapped sweets/bags?
Or shall I do those Halloween treat bags?

I am not sure how many kids will knock as this is a year old new build estate, there are quite a few kids though, I live in the UK.

I get a big box of the mini haribo bags from Tesco. Once they're gone, they're gone.

A box or two of Celebrations or mini-Haribo bags.

This year I have monster munch, cadbury mini rolls and chuppa chups lollies. Had Haribo mini packets last year and a couple of kids whispered “urgh more haribo” thinking they were quietly out of earshot like kids do. 😂So this year I have upped my game!

Previous years I’ve done tins of chocolates like heroes but they go fast as kids grab a handful!

P.s. round here kids only knock if you have a pumpkin or decorations out so you’ll need a lit pumpkin and to be prepared for an onslaught of cuteness when the little ones knock. 😍

When you’ve had enough you can remove the pumpkin and shut your curtains.

Thank you.
I went to B and M this afternoon and got a variety of sweets.

I will just put them all in a treat bowl.

Wrapped sweets. More hygienic.
Don't offer a huge bowl, little kids especially get a bit giddy and try to grab handfuls.
Small bowl or plate with some sweets on. Say loudly 'just one, leave some for others '
I'm done with Halloween this year 😂😂

I echo the above about sealed, wrapped sweets - a lot of parents won't let their kids have unwrapped (or even foil wrapped as it can be opened and redone). I put leftovers in the food bank donation trolley at the supermarket or give them to the church

Any wrapped sweets will do. I get 4 tubs of swizzels because I decorate quite heavily so we get a lot of trick or treaters and it’s embarrassing when we’ve run out in the past. Having said that, I have a wooden sign by the door that says trick or treat and when flipped says ‘out of treats’ so that’s useful.

purser25 · 28/10/2025 15:57

Maybe some chews but just say one each as they will grab a handful even if they have a huge bucketful.

Big bowl of sweets in our house, mostly individually wrapped. We grab a small handful and put it in each kids bag. Don't let the kids grab a handful otherwise it's all gone in minutes!
