Bloody trains!! Delays and precooked tickets!

I am currently trying to get to London.
I left Scotland on a 730 train. Got to Preston by 2 where train was terminated. Finally managed to get on a London train at 5 it was really delayed. Now currently standing hopefully in Euston by 730.
The thing is I have now missed my tain down to the south coast.
Does anyone know as there have been so many delays today if I can get on a later train or will I need to buy another ticket ?

( i don't actually think i have spare money for new tickets)
Argh I'm so tired, cold and hungry

By pre-booked, I presume you mean an Advance ticket.

You can just get the next train. The terms and conditions say:
"5.2 If delays occur while travelling, you will be allowed to take the next available train(s) to complete your journey. "

Yes, you should be able to get the next train as the reason you missed it was because of a delay. Best thing to do, is to ask the conductor on the train or go to the customer service desk when you arrive in Euston.

I will try that. It's actually going to be 3 trains later. Fingers crossed

Don’t forget to look up “delay repay”. You are entitled to compensation back for the delay. It’s a simple form to fill out.

If the ticket office is open, the staff will endorse your ticket or give you a paper pass.
Otherwise just have your story straight.

Ineffable23 · 26/10/2025 19:23

Do you have one advance ticket for the whole journey, or multiple tickets?

If the former you should be able to get the next train (but might want to get a note from the guard on the delayed train). If the latter, I am not sure if you can still get another train.

Ineffable23 · 26/10/2025 19:24

(as in, you might have multiple bits of tickets but if you bought them as one thing that's fine but if you "split" your tickets at London, it might not be).

This!

You can still use your existing ticket on other trains (as PPs have said you could speak to a conductor first) and still claim compensation for they delay

Octavia64 · 26/10/2025 19:24

Yes they usually announce tickets are valid beyond the trains booked for. You can check with ticket office if you are concerned but at the point your booked train was delayed/cancelled and you lost your connection you are fine.

ticket office people will write you a note if they’re not overloaded with hundreds of people due to delays.

DdraigGoch · 26/10/2025 19:53

No need for a fresh ticket, just continue your journey on a later train of the same operator. If you won't be able to complete it (missing the last one of the night etc.) then Avanti have a legal duty not to leave you stranded, they must either arrange alternative transport or put you in a hotel overnight at their expense

Boxingshibes · 26/10/2025 21:26

On a train home, the barrier scanner worked, no conductor so far!
Should arrive home in about an hour so all good.
We've worked out it will have taken us 15hrs to get home.
I've done the pay repay form and it's calculated around £200 which would be great!

Yeah, pre-cooked tickets contain a lot of salt. Best avoided.

WizardofCoz · 26/10/2025 22:40

Well done on the refund forms… also (for future journeys) if your train is cancelled you can get a full refund even if you take the next train (it’s not advertised of course but very easy to get the £ back)
