This has happened in the corner of the kitchen. House isn’t a flat roof but the kitchen part is. It’s been there a while but in last 48 hours it’s got rapidly bigger. Single parent and zero support so very worried. Any advice v v welcome

edited to add that I’ve noticed it in corners of my bedroom too but just a small bit thats never got any worse

yes I'd be worried about that, it needs sorting
are you renting? call the landlord if so
it may be a simple thing- leaves blocking the gutter perhaps

Ablondiebutagoody · 26/10/2025 16:49

Looks like a leak from the flat roof or maybe just a flashing. You will need to get a couple of roofers round to have a look and quote for a repair

Enrichetta · 26/10/2025 16:51

Definitely get a roofer to check this out. Don’t leave it - it’ll only get worse and more expensive to fix.

@newtlover sorry to be stupid but how would leaves blocking the gutter cause it?

The leaves might be blocking the gutter so the water might not be able to drain away, so it’s overflowing.

newtlover · 26/10/2025 16:56

go outside and have a look when its raining
the house next to me has a broken gutter and the rain just pours down the wall- must be causing terrible damp in the house and I have mentioned it to the landlord (its air bnb so no long term tenants to complainbut he cba.

@pinkbackground thanks, I guess I can see this when it’s light? As it’s not a high roof

Possibly, especially if it’s raining or been raining so you can see where the water goes.

Is this going to be thousands to fix?

UndoRedo · 26/10/2025 17:02

No, but get it sorted quickly. With flat roofing you can get sticky tar stuff to fix holes cheaply and effectively or it could simply be a blocked gutter or flashing that's moved. Not a disaster, but get on it

LIZS · 26/10/2025 17:04

How old is the extension? Could be broken or overflowing guttering, a crack or tear in roofing, broken mortar between brickwork. Not necessarily expensive. .

Enrichetta · 26/10/2025 17:07

Blocked gutters are one of the most common causes of water penetration. They ought to be cleaned regularly. If you’ve not done this, it’s very likely to be the reason for your problem.

TheSilentSister · 26/10/2025 17:18

I'm assuming the kitchen is a single storey extension - ask around family/friends if anyone has a ladder so you can get up and take a look. Also assuming that you own the property.

With the bedroom, a roof tile could have slipped or as pp have suggested, the gutters need clearing. It's easy to find out if it is this when it rains heavily, go outside, you would quite literally see the water overflowing the gutters.

Finally, ignore at your peril, it'll only get worse and be more expensive to sort out. Call a roofer to give you a free quote at the very least and take it from there.

FcukBreastCancer · 26/10/2025 17:20

Show as a picture of the outside . It might be obvious where the problem is

CreteBound · 26/10/2025 17:23

That is likely to be guttering or a minor issue wity the roof. Depending on where you are it could be a few hundred to fix but not thousands. Get a picture of the outside and pop it into ChatGPT for suggestions as to cause

Borethefuckoff · 26/10/2025 17:26

We had the same and it was a loose roof tile causing water to drip down. Cost £150 for someone to come and replace!

ComfortFoodCafe · 26/10/2025 17:29

We had this! Was condensation, but the house is 80 years old so not in the best of conditions. Dehumidifier fixed it.

This happened to us a few months ago. We had water ingress OP. We now have our gutters cleaned regularly. The business who cleaned our gutters said it was the worst they had ever seen.

Please don't leave it. We had birds roosting too which left debris not just leaves.

This is exactly what happened to us. Water backfilled in the gutter due to the huge amount of leaves in it.

£60 to clean our gutters and our problem was solved. We have had heavy rain since and no problems.

FuzzyWolf · 26/10/2025 17:35

Hopefully it’s just because your gutters need cleaning and if so, you can put up a treatment to protect and repaint.

SeaAndStars · 26/10/2025 17:39

This could be gutters but it could also be condensation.

Have you been cooking a lot, showering/bathing, drying clothes in the house and had all the windows closed? This will cause this.

Beeloux · 26/10/2025 17:46

Slates missing on roof and rain water has got in. Happened in my (rented flat) many a time.

If you’re renting, contact the landlord immediately. Mine usually gets a roofer out the following day or Monday if it happens on a weekend. It normally happens if it’s been heavy rain/wind.

Quamarina · 26/10/2025 17:54

If it’s a flat roof, I’m assuming kitchen is on ground floor? Try & get out there with a selfie stick, put your phone in & extend as far as it goes & try to record what’s going on with the flat roof & guttering. Might just be a loose tile needs cementing in, or debris blocking the guttering. But please do investigate, I had a dreadful football size hole in the ceiling & a lot of water damage where 3 roof tiles had cracked & slipped down & the rain must have been hammering it for a couple of months, eventually breaking through the loft floor / ceiling & soaking everything when we had a storm, I didn’t see any signs because it was inside a built in cupboard (handy as the repair didn’t need to be perfect but disastrous as if I’d had warning it could have been fixed before it got to that point) the first I knew of it was the strange sensation of hearing heavy rain inside as if I were outside. Good luck! Being a ground floor roof & not needing too much faff to get to it, the repair shouldn’t be as expensive.
