Need immune system tips that actually work!

I desperately need to boost my immune system, I work in a school and this year for some reason I just keep catching everything going! I’ve basically been ill every week since the start of September. This last week has been awful, I’ve been off work with a high temp, cold symptoms, sickness and a really painful neck (all at once not separately). I can’t seem to shift this one and keep feeling worse everyday rather than better.
About 6 months ago I really turned my life around, lost a lot of weight (am now a healthy bmi instead of obese), I’ve been eating really healthily, cut out all alcohol and have been exercising. I also started taking vitamin d, b12, vitamin c and omega 3. So realistically I should be at my healthiest, but I just can’t seem to kick any bug!
Has anyone got any tips of things that actually work?

I've been having a cold burst at the end of every shower after listening to this episode of Just One Thing and I do think I have been ill less since I started. I think it's also helped my Raynaud-like symptoms (where my fingers go white when they get cold)

BBC Radio 4 - Just One Thing - with Michael Mosley - Why we should all be taking cold showers

Dr Michael Mosley investigates the health benefits of cold water.

@HoppityBun

You can't improve your immune system by diet and exercise etc?

Kosenrufugirl · 26/10/2025 16:59

I swear by 2-3 buckets of cold water every morning. (I hate cold showers even though there's evidence cold showers work). If you decide to give it a go, wait until you get better first

the things I do to support my immure system include

drinking lots of water / herbal tea. Rotating around individually of combinations of mint, lemon, lime, ginger

get plenty of good quality sleep

cram as many leafy green vegetable down my throat each day, dressed with good quality olive oil and apple cider vinegar .

if I notice the glands in my throat are ‘up’ ie fighting infection, first thing in the morning I swallow a crushed close of garlic wasted down with a glass of water

rely in a powerful immune system to keep me healthy. I rarely get colds etc.

Hypertonic saline spray kills more bacteria and draws out more mucous and fluid than isotonic and helps the cilia work better to defend against and flush out infectious agents. So I use that daily during cold/flu/RSV season as well as mask. I wash my hands a lot too.

Exercise, sleep, healthy diet including lots of veg, regular hand washing.
I read somewhere that you're more likely to catch a cold from someone from borrowing their pen than being next to them sneezing.

Sleep

fresh air

vitamins - throat spray with bee propolis seems to be helping me!

Vicks First Defence nose spray the minute you feel a sneeze seems to stop things developing - don’t use this regularly as it’s bad for your mucous membranes and will make things worse! But if you’ve been around someone with a cold or feel a symptom.

I have people breathing over me 24/7 at work and home and haven’t been ill yet this year 🤞🤞🤞

Plenty of fresh air. I find having the log burner and central heating on really dries out mucus membranes and increases risk of developing all sorts of nasty bugs. I always sleep with the window open and take plenty of walks. Eat plenty of veg and fruit. Supplement wise I take vitamin D with K2.

This podcast is worth listening to in relation to the scientific evidence behind a lot of the things mentioned above.
