Place I visit Frequently a Fire Risk?

A gym I visit three to four times a week has become very important to me. I've never loved exercise before- feels I've found my people, making massive progress, I can be myself etc, and is located in an old industrial warehouse on the 1st floor. It occurred to me when I was in there alone this week that the fire escape is blocked with a bar, there are two dusty old extinguishers, no emergency lighting, no evacuation signs, a fire alarm hidden away in a back room and windows have security bars on. If there was a fire, you'd probably be toast.
The owner has supported me massively, I have a lot of respect for them and what they do, they're a family person, three kids and another on the way.
I dont feel comfortable raising the above concerns with them. If I was to do so with the Fire Bridage, they'd probably be closed down, fined a lot of money, I'd lose my place to train, etc. But I know, as work in safeguarding, its the right thing to do. Isn't it? Please, can you help me and tell me what the Fire Brigade would do if they visited after my speaking to them anonymously?
I feel so conflicted 😐.

I would say something. If he gets closed down then that is on him. I would hope they'd assess and give advice on getting up to code, but I dont know what the process is. Hopefully someone will be along soon with accurate info!

They’d get the opportunity to put it right first.

ExcitingRicotta · 25/10/2025 21:07

If they’ve supported you and you genuinely think this is a problem it would be so unkind of you to report them without speaking to them first and giving them a chance to rectify it?!

Basically this. They won't get shut down immediately unless it's really horrific (people sleeping there for example). They will be given advice and support to put it right. It's really important that they do.

Thanks, everyone. That's really helpful. Ive never posted on here before and feel better already seeing replies. I dont feel comfortable addressing with them directly, as its not me, but glad to hear they'd likely have an opportunity to put everything right if I did report the issues to the Fire Service directly.

I once tried very hard to report a business to the fire service it was an AirBnB that was a complete death trap but I couldn't find a way of doing it. How does it work?

Dollymylove · 25/10/2025 21:35

If someone is running a business which entails people spending time in the property there are legally required. Fire extinguishers, signposted exits kept clear at all times and an evacuation procedure. If fire broke out and persons reported this person could be in very big trouble. I would have a word with him first before making any reports

Ticktockwatchclock · 25/10/2025 21:36

Contact Environmental Health at the local Council, not the Fire Brigade. EH have powers to force changes, Fire Brigade can only advise.

Yerdug · 25/10/2025 21:38

It looks like I can call my local Fire and Rescue Service and report a concern.
