Im so shocked that she has done this AIBU? Surely this isn't normal for someone of this age to have access to this kit? Am I completely over-reacting? Please tell me i am as I'm very unpopular right now! This is in light of all the allergy stories I have read and damage to nails etc.

When did their dad use UV lamps then? Poster said " My dh has had melanoma twice and he’s never used a sun bed. Doctors have put it down to possibly one trip abroad as a child 40 years earlier."

So what's that got to do with using UV lamps?

Also you seem to forget teenagers think they are invincible .

Edited

I just think that if a teenager has a father who has had melanoma twice, they will be wary of UV. Be it from the sun or from artificial light. I think they will be able to understand that one has an association with the other. If your dad gets run over by a bus, you would also be wary of cars when you were crossing the road.

I’ve got teenagers but they are clever and thoughtful.

For all these people saying a one off is fine. How is she going to get it off?

The OP hasn't even confirmed that it's proper gel polish been used. Could be regular stuff

Chop her hands off. Right now.

Lol at no child of mine would ever do that.!!! How are you going to stop them as a teenager

“Lol”? Jeez. I think seeing their dad have huge chunks of skin cut out of his face and needing plastic surgery has put them off for life.

PeloMom · 28/10/2025 18:50

I wouldn’t be happy. Explain to her (or ask her to research) the possible side effects over time and especially the effects of UV lamps used on such young skin without sun protection.

She’s an eleven year old child. I think the OP would have mentioned if her dd had done a beauty therapy course.

Doesn’t mean that they can’t be removed correctly!!

LynetteScavo · 28/10/2025 19:06

I fed my DC mostly organic food and used mostly organic products. Banned processed meat. Was very wary of storing food in plastic, you get the picture. But I couldn’t get worked up about this as a once off at a friend’s house. I certainly wouldn’t be purchasing a kit, but as a once off, no one’s fingers are going to melt. I would be explaining the dangers, though.
I’d also discuss things like laser hair removal, and straighteners because next week she could be at a different friend house and raid another mum’s beauty tools for an afternoon of “salon” fun, which might not end so well.

Actually, yes there’s a real possibility that the skin under the nails will burn when the gel is being cured.

When gel is applied to thin nails like children’s nails, and cured under the UV light, you get heat spikes that cause severe pain and burning.

I do wish parents would properly research the dangers of these products being used on children rather than assuming they must be safe because lots of adults use them without any issue.

Any parent taking their child to get gel nails done in a salon is incredibly reckless.

@Flakey99 - no sensible parent is taking their child to have gel nails done in a salon. That’s not what happened here - the DD and a friend accessed a home kit and did it themselves. Lots of things are not particularly safe, but as a one off I couldn’t get too angry about this and would educate my child about why it’s not safe. If an 11yo experienced a heat spike they’d pull their hand out pretty damn quick! Although some damage would already be done, I doubt they’d be quick to repeat it!
I’d been more worried about eye damage from looking at the UV lamp, and as others have said, triggering an allergic reaction.

I’m not going to click on a random link.

@gamerchickthe nail polish that you need a UV lamp for contains chemicals that if you become allergic to them means you can’t have certain dental treatment or bone replacements.

I was discussing this earlier with someone as I didn’t understand. Surely if you’re allergic to the chemical you’re allergic whether you’ve had gel nails or not? And surely it’s better to know you’re allergic after a removable nail treatment than finding out after a bone implant?

Apparently 3% of the population is allergic to the chemical but most don’t know about it.

RandomMess · 28/10/2025 21:07

@CryMyEyesVioletyou can develop allergies due to exposure. Nails are dead how ever cuticles, skin etc aren’t.

Most allergies develop due to repeated exposure on your skin. This is one of the reasons why technicians should always wear gloves. When you have your nails done they are extremely careful to not get the polish on your skin.

It's not as simple as that, allergies can develop at different times and exposure (and the type of exposure) can play a role in the development of and severity of allergies

Again - I’m absolutely ignorant to this and truly interested… if you are exposed to it in a medical procedure is that a once and done exposure or an ongoing exposure if it’s in the bone graft (?)

SergeantWrinkles · 29/10/2025 19:41

Not being funny but OP has posted twice, given no ACTUAL details as to what’s gone on and Mumsnet has done its finest frothing in her absence! Everyone has made assumptions about what the DD has done, but really nobody knows!
