How much would you pay for this cake?

Tried a bun from an independent cake shop recently and asked the baker how much it would be to be made into a birthday cake.
She said for 25cm diameter, it would be £30. The toppings are cream and blueberries, nothing fancy at all, just a regular sponge cake. I'm not really planning to spend £30 for a cake when it isn't a big birthday, so I just politely said it's a bit over budget but thanks for the quote.
She came back and asked what my budget is, and she can make it smaller. However I think it would be a bit too small then and if I'm honest, I'm thinking of just going into Sainsbury's and buying one for £10-£15 as usual lol.
What does everyone else think?

Make it yourself if it's "nothing fancy". People don't have a clue how much everythig costs with cakes

Tiswa · 25/10/2025 14:32

That £30 from an independent bakery sounds a pretty good price!

that if you want it to serve over 10 it is more like £15-20 even at the supermarket so the extra bit seems worth it for the taste you want and freshly made

quitefranklyabsurd · 25/10/2025 14:33

I'm always amazed that people want champagne on a water budget.

You’re never going to pay supermarket prices for a handmade cake and nor should you expect too.

TheChosenTwo · 25/10/2025 14:34

I’ve accidentally voted when I didn’t want to as I don’t think either side is unreasonable but it won’t let me retract my vote!
You asked, it’s more than you think it’s worth to you. Nothing unreasonable about that.
I’d rather have no cake than one from a supermarket personally, much rather a homemade one which is what I usually have. Costs infinitely more to make but isn’t stuffed full of things I don’t want to eat so it’s worth it to me.
You spend your money how you want!

GrumpyInsomniac · 25/10/2025 14:34

Considering ingredient cost and labour time, as well as the extortionate amount small businesses pay for utilities, £30 sounds like a really good price. But if you can’t afford it, by all means go the supermarket route.

Luxio · 25/10/2025 14:35

£30 for a cake made by a proper bakery sounds incredibly cheap to be honest. Ingredients are extortionate these days so I suspect it would cost just as much to make it at home.

This. Think, if it takes her 3 hours at 12.50 that's 37.50 already, then back and forth admin time... then delivery of being available for pick up. On top of making the actual cake, ingredients, electricity... which isn't cheap, insurance etc.

People are unbelievable and that minimum wage, you got yourself a good deal there.

unleashthebook · 25/10/2025 14:38

If it’s just a sponge cake with cream and blueberries, make it yourself 🤷🏼‍♀️

Superhansrantowindsor · 25/10/2025 14:40

Cakes from a supermarket imo taste nothing like those by a proper baker. £30 seems cheap to me but then I’m a keen amateur baker and know how long it takes and how expensive ingredients are.

tilypu · 25/10/2025 14:41

£30 is a bargain! It's being specially made for you.

YANBU to buy whatever you choose. But YABU to expect to pay supermarket prices (and let's face it, supermarket cake is fine, but it's nowhere near as good as proper bakery cake) for cake from an independent bakery.

OrangeKettle · 25/10/2025 14:41

and supermarket cakes are generally disgusting (and I eat pretty much anything!). So that’s why they’re £10-15.

GAJLY · 25/10/2025 14:42

Supermarket is always going to be cheaper but isn't going to be as good as a Baker. If it's literally sponge, cream and blueberries then that's ridiculously easy to make! You just need to bake a couple of sponges!

applesss · 25/10/2025 14:43

Do you think she should do it for free?!

Bagsintheboot · 25/10/2025 14:44

25cm diameter is a reasonable size cake, I think £30 is cheap for a birthday cake from a proper baker with proper ingredients!

StrawberrySquash · 25/10/2025 14:44

£30 is a good price. Because of the cost of her time etc as others have said. But it's perfectly fair to decide that while it's a fair price you'd rather have a supermarket one for less money (go to M&S). The automation and economies of scale will make it cheaper, along with the fact it is longer life so there's less waste.

nomas · 25/10/2025 14:45

Lol what? How do you expect them to make any profit if they sell it to you for cheap?

Why do you think their effort isn’t worth paying for, OP?

Merryoldgoat · 25/10/2025 14:45

That’s a 10 inch cake. That, for a very basic cake is around

8 eggs
500g flour
500g sugar
500g butter

Then is the filling is crème pat you need more eggs, butter, and sugar plus cornflour and all the fresh fruit

The cake drum and box

And the skill and knowledge to make and decorate the cake which will take around an hour to mix and bake and a further 15 mins to assemble

£30 is a bargain

Either you value a bespoke fresh cake or you don’t but if you do you need to pay.

Tamfs · 25/10/2025 14:45

She is being very reasonable - likely underselling herself. But it's your money, your choice. You do get what you pay for though.

ByTwinklyDreamer · 25/10/2025 14:45

£30 is really cheap, did you think she would do it for a tenner or something?

CheshireDing · 25/10/2025 14:46

I think that sounds very cheap and would have said at least £55 for what you describe.

Curious how much per hour do you think the bakers time is worth OP?

stichguru · 25/10/2025 14:48

£30 is a bargain unless you want a cheap supermarket cake, in which case go buy one!

TulipCat · 25/10/2025 14:50

Some people are absolutely deluded about the cost of bespoke products. You can't expect to pay peanuts for a handmade cake. Cheapskates are always belittling the work they want doing "It's just a small job" "won't take long" "I only want..."

Cherrytree86 · 25/10/2025 14:58

yanbu OP, a tenner would have been ample to pay

PommesdePlume · 25/10/2025 15:07

I had a gluten free cake made for a birthday in the summer, around the 12" (in old money) size. It wasn't particularly fancy and was £40

Hankunamatata · 25/10/2025 15:10

A decent sponge ingredients can cost quite a bit - butter is expensive! Add in cost of cream of blueberries your probably looking good £15 for ingredients
