Toilet on train from Heathrow to Russell square?

Travelfairy · 24/10/2025 22:07

Travelling to London on Wednesday from Dublin. Will be getting the train. I believe it is non stop train that takes 55 minutes. Is there toilets on board? I have a kidney condition. Posting here for traffic. Apologies!

If it’s the Piccadilly Line, i.e. the underground, then there won't be any toilets on the train.

Goshgoshgosh · 24/10/2025 22:12

I think you’re referring to the Piccadilly line and there are no toilets on underground trains

Brelim · 24/10/2025 22:17

The Piccadilly line is an underground line and will stop at every station (of which there are many!). Here is a map showing all the stations that have toilets on the underground (purple thick line on the map is the one you will be on). You can hop off the train to use the toilet and get back on again. You might want to take the Elizabeth line instead which will be much quicker.

I would take the Elizabeth line to Tottenham Court Road and walk from there. Still no toilets in bars but a much faster and nicer journey.

ELO10538 · 24/10/2025 23:13

Sorry, OP the answer is NO.

Travelfairy · 24/10/2025 23:14

Thank you so much for all the info as when I Google its saying its a non stop train!

No toilets on the tube. Another option may be a coach.
takes around the same time but has a toilet onboard

EnidSpyton · 24/10/2025 23:26

Go to the toilet at Heathrow before you get the tube.

At Heathrow, get the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road. This will only take 20 minutes - it's very fast. Whatever you do, don't take the Piccadilly Line to Russell Square - it takes forever.

At Tottenham Court Road, there are toilets at the station. So you'll only be 20 mins without access to a loo.

It's an easy 10 minute walk to Russell Square from Tottenham Court Road.

Enjoy!

BIWI · 24/10/2025 23:28

It isn’t a non-stop train @Travelfairy, but there aren’t any station stops for you to go to the toilet.

Piccadilly Line is blue. I wouldn’t use it from Heathrow to central London, far too slow. Elizabeth Line much quicker.

It's not 20 minutes, it's about 35 minutes. And around 20 minutes between each train at some times of day so if you just miss one, it could take 55 minutes to get there PLUS the walk from Tottenham Court Road.
Given that the Piccadilly line runs far more frequently, the time difference (unless you happen to be very lucky and find an Elizabeth line train waiting for you) isn't that much at all. The Elizabeth Line is a bit more comfortable though.

Most of the time I save the money and get the Piccadilly Line. You're first on at Heathrow, so you've got a seat.

QOrion · 25/10/2025 01:06

The Piccadilly line and the Elizabeth line are the most direct ways of getting to Russell Square from Heathrow but Heathrow Express is also available. It is non-stop to Paddington and does have toilets but you would need to change trains twice after reaching Paddington to get to Russell Square. It’s about 5 stops in total but 2 changes makes it an awkward journey.

parietal · 25/10/2025 01:25

If you have money to spare, Heathrow express and then a taxi is the fastest and poshest way to do this journey.

otherwise, Elizabeth line is good but do check train times before you leave Heathrow.

Where would I get off the Heathrow express?

Paddington Station, which is the end of the line. The Heathrow Express is significantly more expensive than other options.

QOrion · 25/10/2025 09:08

The website says tickets are available if booked in advance from £10, which isn’t too bad, considering the journey is much shorter than other options.

QOrion · 25/10/2025 09:09

I’m referring to the Heathrow Express in my post above.

FenceBooksCycle · 25/10/2025 09:10

I would do Heathrow Express which is much more expensive but there are toilets on board and it only takes 15 minutes to get to central london (you can then get the Elizabeth Line to Tottenham Court Road which is very close to Russell Square). Or you can get the Elizabeth Line the whole way in about 35 minutes but then no loos. Piccadilly line taking 55 mins is the worst possible choice.

Most of the time I save the money and get the Piccadilly Line. You're first on at Heathrow, so you've got a seat.

I would never recommend the Piccadilly Line to someone travelling into central from Heathrow unless they had a very heavy suitcase, weren't in a hurry and travelling to a destination with a stop on the Piccadilly Line.

The Elizabeth Line runs very frequently from Heathrow during weekdays - I've never had to wait 20 minutes for a train apart from when there were issues on the line or arriving into Heathrow very late. I really don't agree that the Piccadilly Line is the best bet for someone who has bladder issues - it's cramped, hot, slow, prone to delays en route and there's no guarantee of a seat. The Elizabeth Line is a much more pleasant experience.

The Elizabeth Line also doesn't cost any more money than the Piccadilly Line. It's only the Heathrow Express that costs more.

For someone new to London and needing to get to Russell Square, with the very real issue that getting to a toilet might be a problem, I would still recommend the Elizabeth Line.

You can go just before you get on the train - you can see in the arrivals/departures hall before you go down to the Elizabeth Line what time the next train is on the departures board, so you can wait until the last minute upstairs and go to the loo up there before you get on board. It's then about 20 - 30 mins on the tube (it always feels like 20 mins to me but I've always got my nose in a book so I may be inaccurate there!) before you're in Tottenham Court Road station, with a toilet to hand, and an easy walk to Russell Square.

However, if 30 mins is too long to be without a toilet - you might be better off with the Heathrow Express to Paddington, which is expensive, but it's very fast and there are toilets, as others have said. You would then get off at Paddington, and go out of the exit clearly marked 'Elizabeth Line' - bear in mind that at Paddington there are essentially four separate parts to the station - there's two separate sections of the underground for different tube lines that come into Paddington, there's the above ground mainline train station, and then there's a new bit outside with the Elizabeth Line - so don't follow the signs to the underground, you need to specifically follow the signs for the Elizabeth Line. You can then jump on that to Tottenham Court Road - and that only takes 10 minutes from Paddington. You can then go to the toilet again if needed there before heading on to Russell Square by foot (10 mins walk).

Good luck with it - please know as well that it's a total myth that Londoners are unfriendly - if you get lost or stuck at any point, just ask someone and they will help you!

NotDavidTennant · 25/10/2025 09:42

As a general rule trains in London don't have toilets (the Heathrow Express is one exception). If you're going to be travelling around the city it is advisable to work out in advance which stations on your route have toilets.

How kind of you to take the time to type all of this. I am going to screenshot and save. 30 mind without a toilet I will manage. I am travelling with a young child too so I definitely want easiest/quickest. Think I will do the Elizabeth line. I could walk from Tottenham court i think x

The Elizabeth line ia great - clean, modern and fast and you get phone signal all the way - even in the tunnels.

You can also use your contactless bank card to pay, so no need to worry about buying tickets.

gooeasy · 25/10/2025 18:23

I sometimes use Heathrow express if the Elizabeth line is particularly busy/disrupted. It’s £25 to buy a one way ticket there and then but I have a railcard so it is £16 something using that. More expensive than the other routes but definitely worth it sometimes
