I think I'll just post the email without any elaboration for now, and see what people think, this is copied and pasted directly, with identifying info changed:

Dear Mrs X,

It’s great to be able to invite you to a special evening for parents of our Pupil Premium students in Years 7, 8 and 9 on Thursday 20th November 2025.

We’ll be starting with a light buffet tea from 5:00 pm, giving you the chance to chat informally with staff and other parents before the evenings presentations begin.

At 5:30 pm, I’ll give a short overview of how we use Pupil Premium funding here at school to support students’ learning and wellbeing, and to help every child make the best possible progress.

From 6.00 pm to 7:00 pm, we will to be joined by Elevate Education, who will deliver a practical, engaging seminar designed to help parents support learning at home.

Topics covered will include:

- Time Management – helping your child to plan effectively and avoid last-minute stress.

  • - Study Support – understanding what effective study looks like and how to make it stick.
  • - Motivation – discovering what really drives student motivation and how to nurture it.
  • - Parent E-book Access – every parent attending will receive a free e-book full of strategies and guidance.

This is a brilliant opportunity to pick up some useful ideas and find out more about how we’re supporting your child’s progress in school.

I really hope you’ll be able to join us for what promises to be an enjoyable and informative evening.

Please let us know if you can attend by completing the form on EduLink.

Kind regards,

Mr Y
Senior Assistant Headteacher

PP pupils underperform countrywide, fact.
Do a bit of research!!

Not sure where crack comes into it, maybe in the circles you move in but definitely not mine.
And it is the most bizarre attempt at an insult I have seen in a long time. I pity you.

Do your own research, it’s about money and free School meals, I worked in a School. I pity you.

Notchangingnameagain · 24/10/2025 22:29

So, basically you are a snob and think you are better than other parents whose children get the PP.

PringlesTube · 24/10/2025 22:29

Do you get offended by your kids free school trips, uniform and dinners too?

MarinaBallerina · 24/10/2025 22:30

This is what’s wrong with education, the obsession with data. Quantitative over qualitative.

Arlanymor · 24/10/2025 22:30

musicalfrog · 24/10/2025 22:27

Presumably that is why this event is being targeted at this group of parents? Because the funding is intended for them and nobody else.

Exactly, that was the point I was making.

Hillarious · 24/10/2025 22:31

A misguided, misdirected tickbox exercise. How the premium is used is of interest to the whole school community. Anyone specifically needing guidance on parenting should be sensitively contacted direct. They’re not going to respond to a round robin email.

tragichero · 24/10/2025 22:31

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/10/2025 22:22

It's not the school that's decided to do this it's the government trying to target help where it's needed and children on Free School Meals isn't the only group that qualifies.

The school have chosen to spend the money on this type of evening though, rather than other interventions. I have never heard of an evening like this being targeted at a specific group of parents like this before. I think it's quite unusual.

(Though maybe someone will come along to bite my head off and say that it happens all the time, everywhere .....)

Ahh, were you one of the office bitches?
You clearly weren't at the cutting edge of pupil outcomes and their demographic.
And pp isn't just about fsm, you are showing your ignorance.
I don't need pity from someone like you 😂

Consideringparttime · 24/10/2025 22:31

It's like being offended at the videos on a self checkout as it insinuates you are a shoplifter. You know you're not, but they are trying to catch the ones who are

GelatoForMe · 24/10/2025 22:31

DoodleSquad · 24/10/2025 21:55

Blimey. Is everyone offended by everything nowadays? First world problems!

I see the OP's frustration.
Being poor - is this what it is or? Does being poor or having a child with extra funding makes you a stupid person, a mad parents or a parent with no basic skills like opening a manual, reading a page and memorising few basics

ladygindiva · 24/10/2025 22:32

PringlesTube · 24/10/2025 22:29

Do you get offended by your kids free school trips, uniform and dinners too?

Pp students don't get free uniform or trips. As a pupil premium parent, I get zilch towards uniform and a subsidy on trips.

saraclara · 24/10/2025 22:32

TardisDweller · 24/10/2025 22:24

You've misunderstood what pp is.

I'm a teacher (albeit recently retired). I know perfectly well what it is.

But it doesn't stop some of the parents invited to this feeling a bit crap. The way it's being presented is clumsy.

mzpq · 24/10/2025 22:32

MarinaBallerina · 24/10/2025 22:28

No, lateness affects attendance data and not exam performance.

You've twisted what I said into a pretzel there and I'm not sure why?

Ok, I'll rephrase it.

I thought statistically, more children receiving PP are late than those who don't receive PP.

Therefore, those are the parents who will more likely benefit from any help given.

There is an evidenced attainment gap between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged pupils. It's not about inherent qualities, but circumstance.

Soupandaroll · 24/10/2025 22:32

Consideringparttime · 24/10/2025 21:58

Where has the art of "that's not for me" gone?
"Oh look an email to support parents who need that help. I feel totally confident and my kids are thriving, so I don't feel I need it but thanks anyway"
Now replaced with offence taken. Next time school won't do it, so.kids who do need the help and support won't get it, but hey, at least no one was offended.

This

PupilpremiumWTF · 24/10/2025 22:32

Wot23 · 24/10/2025 22:20

utterly reasonable that pupil premium students are being given extra support - that is kinda the point after all.

Evidence supports the fact that the home environment is a contributory factor partially underpinning why the pupil is "disadvantaged" in the first place.
Therefore educating the parents is necessary so the parents don't, by their own ignorance of how to be effectively supportive, hold back their own kid

i see nothing "offensive" in such a stance. Attendance is not compulsory and parents are not being tested on whether they are good parents. They are merely being given an opportunity to improve the home environment.

They are merely being given an opportunity to improve the home environment.

This is exactly it though. There is an assumption that the home environment needs improving.
That's what's offensive.

I was a school student in the 80s with free everything you mention, and as a direct result, I now do everything in my power to teach students that they are not inferior to anyone.

TwoTuesday · 24/10/2025 22:33

I can see what you mean. It seems to be assuming that Pupil Premium parents don't know how to time manage or support their kids with study. Maybe some don't (like any parents), so it might benefit some kids if so? Schools can come across as patronising but if it helps some kids then let them carry on.

LlamaNoDrama · 24/10/2025 22:34

I get it. They're assuming pp parents need this, and non pp parents don't. Implying pp parents are less invested in their children's education.

ladygindiva · 24/10/2025 22:34

saraclara · 24/10/2025 22:29

Yep. It's basically saying that PP parents don't know this stuff, and the parents that aren't invited are already perfect parents.

We all know that that's not the case, and as a retired teacher I certainly know that's not the case.

I stick up for schools and teachers a lot on Mumsnet, but I really do think that this has been done insensitively. I can only imagine that the huge majority of posters who don't get it, are the smug parents who wouldn't get an invitation.

Agreed

Some do, if needed. As well as internet, revision guides, theatre tickets, ingredients for practical lessons etc. It's a conversation with the school.

No, because they record every single shopper.

So it not even remotely the same thing.
