Can’t believe I forgot to give my kids the bumps

Kids are young adults. Randomly just remembered giving people the bumps on their birthdays and now I’m gutted we never did it with the kids. Has anyone had the bumps in the last 40 years?

I remember the bumps but it was always something done by friends in my experience, needs a lot of people! Can’t imagine my mum doing it!
We used to do it at school but possibly dangerous so wouldn’t be encouraged now I imagine

Fluffyholeysocks · 24/10/2025 11:40

I never experienced parents giving their kids the bumps - it was a school playground thing as far as I remember

dullgreysky · 24/10/2025 13:35

I recall being given the bumps at school back in the 60's. By friends, not parents. I don't recall either of my children saying they were given the bumps by their schoolfriends in the 90's. I would be surprised if they would even know what I meant if I asked them to describe the bumps.

verycloakanddaggers · 24/10/2025 13:40

Do you not remember it died out because it was known to result in lots of injuries as people were dropped or jolted?

This is one of those things that belongs in the same category as 'smoking in the house with your kids' 'letting your kids use an open chip pan' and 'not wearing a seatbelt'.

There are loads of weird posts this week with people romanticising the old days. Bumps were weird and belong in the past.

I’ve no idea what you mean? Can someone explain?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/10/2025 13:46

What? I was born in the mid 80s and it was not something anyone did because we all knew it was dangerous and people had got really hurt!

You hold somone in the air, between 4 people, suspended by their arms and legs, and shake / fling them up and down. Once for each year of age.

People hold your legs and arms and bounce you up and down the number of years you are.

It got banned in plenty of schools because people used to do it very violently resulting in injuries.

As with many things back then it was at best only semi-consensual.

notacooldad · 24/10/2025 13:48

I have never given nor received Bumps!
( Im 60)

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 24/10/2025 13:50

@W0tnow We used to seize the birthday girl or boy by their arms and legs and throw them, prone, up and down (keeping hold of limbs) once for every year of their age then dump them on the ground at the finish.

And this clearly explains why it became unpopular!

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 24/10/2025 13:53

Getting “egged” on your birthday was a thing where I lived. Also the bumps.

And one for luck 😁

Me neither, age 55. I've a feeling my primary school might have banned the practice. It sounds horrible anyway.

zazazaaar · 24/10/2025 14:02

I loved the bumps! I mean it probably explains my slight limp but still.

Wonder if it was regional (south west for me)

Devonmaid1844 · 24/10/2025 14:07

We used to do it in a sheet or big towel, I think to make it less dangerous however kids would just go flying into the air and come crashing down off to the side or onto someone's head. Lots of fun though

TimetodoEverything · 24/10/2025 14:07

Gosh that’s a blast from the past! Yet another thing my teenage children wouldn’t have a clue about.

My 14 year old asked what a cassette is the other day.

Feeling old (51).

I have a feeling it had stopped before I finished primary school. I remember it when I was around 6 or 7 but don’t remember seeing it in later years.

notacooldad · 24/10/2025 14:14

If you think thats bad, one of the teenagers i work with didnt know what an ipod was. I thought it was a one off but age showed the group mine and none of them knew what it was either!

RabbitsEatPancakes · 24/10/2025 14:19

I was given the bumps as a child by family but it'd when I was small and they were lots of adults to not drop me.

I love them, we should definitely try to restart them!

Edited to add i was a child in the 90s.

Okiedokie123 · 24/10/2025 14:20

Yabu
This is surely only ever something done at school anyway (because you need sufficient people to do it)
And not all that common anyway. Even in the 80s/90s
I don’t think I ever experienced it as a kid and rarely witnessed it.

Sagaciously · 24/10/2025 14:20

I don’t think the bumps are still a thing with kids.

Yes I was going to say And one for luck!

I hated being given the bumps! Just hated it!

I got the bumps at my 21st birthday 🙁

Are some people really like this or is it satire? Jesus
