And yes, yes I know there is an "alcohol support" section of MN but this isn't for help or advice or anything other than curiosity!

Just been reading on another thread about what people do and don't do which others would find unusual and a LOT of the posts include people saying they don't drink alcohol which I find insane as pretty much everyone I know drinks to some degree!

Anyway I'll start, I don't (or try not to!) drink from Mon - Thurs but on average will have a bottle of wine on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. So 3 x bottles of wine a week. I know it's above the guidelines of "normal" drinking and know I need to cut down but it's something I genuinely enjoy. DH is the same. We never get drunk. We just slowly drink 3-4 glasses over the course of the evening (from about 6pm to 11ish) whilst making dinner, sitting down to eat, watching a film / reading a book... It's just something that helps us to unwind after a busy week!

So for AIBU

YABU - No thanks, would rather have a cup of tea.
YANBU - Pour me a large one!

I stopped drinking in 2021 when I realised I had a problematic relationship with alcohol. I’m the only one in my social circle who doesn’t though. My friends tell me they have half to a bottle of wine a week normally, a bit more on holiday or during festive season,

Holluschickie · 23/10/2025 10:36

Maybe 1 glass of wine or one small gin a month. DH doesn't drink and I dislike drinking alone. Don't need the calories either.

Do you just throw the rest of the bottle of wine away?

DorothyCrowfootHodgkin · 23/10/2025 17:35

I don't drink much (usually only when with friends - very, very rarely when home with DP, although he'll have a beer or a glass of wine Friday - Sunday evenings) but that's because I don't particularly enjoy it. So I probably don't count in your poll because my low drinking is not due to restraint!

applecharlotte · 23/10/2025 17:37

I stopped drinking 2 years ago. Was just feeling crap the day after even after just one of two glasses of wine. I loved wine but now have more energy, better skin and lower anxiety levels so think it was worth it for me.

GreyChicken · 23/10/2025 17:40

Zero.

It's the bad sleep I get, the calories, the snacking cravings, it's just not worth it for me.

ComfortFoodCafe · 23/10/2025 17:42

I got drunk about 6 weeks ago on rum and had to crawl to bed, that was it for me. havent drank since, dont plan to again.

catlovingdoctor · 23/10/2025 17:44

2 glasses of wine every evening usually. Sometimes more if out

No she's not and neither are you.

Thanks, I’ll let my cardiologist know.

thatswhatshesaid36 · 23/10/2025 17:58

I could truthfully never drink alcohol again and be pretty happy with that. I have a few glasses of Buck’s Fizz on Christmas Day, and maybe a shandy or two over the summer. It’s a waste of money, those are the only two drinks I think actually taste nice, but they make me feel absolutely rotten.

Ireolu · 23/10/2025 18:02

I drink once a year on average. DH doesn't drink so we don't buy it in. I have never liked the taste of alcohol. I drank most at the start of uni but even by the end had reduced amounts considerably. I don't think I'm on my own in this as most people we socialise with don't drink much either.

yummyscummymummy01 · 23/10/2025 18:11

No alcohol between Sunday and Wednesday and then between one or two bottles spread over Thursday to Saturday. My husband hardly ever drinks though.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/10/2025 18:11

Not very much.

Once every fortnight a friend isn't working the weekend and she usually comes around. We'll have 2 or 3 drinks together.

If it's a weekend she isn't around I might have one glass of something.

Once every fortnight a different friend and I meet up for dinner and we take it in turns to drive. If it's not my turn to drive I'll have a pint of cider with the meal. (I don't like wine!)

Apart from that I don't drink.

DH doesn't really drink at all. He buys the mini bottles of lager and might occasionally have one of those. Just one.

Lilyhatesjaz · 23/10/2025 18:18

I don't really drink alcohol at all, I may have one at Christmas but that is it.
Wine makes me feel really ill. But basically I just don't like the taste.
Sometimes I think to myself I could have a drink and then I think or I could have a cup of coffee and the coffee wins every time.

Bundleflower · 23/10/2025 18:27

Most evenings. Between half a bottle and a bottle of white.

mamaduckbone · 23/10/2025 18:29

Generally nothing Monday - Thursday unless on holiday.
Maybe 2-3 drinks on a Friday and/or Saturday night and occasionally a glass of wine with Sunday lunch if there's some left in a bottle.

If we're not going out or seeing friends I'll often open a bottle of wine on a Friday night and that will do me for the weekend. Dh usually has a beer rather than wine and often doesn't drink at all. I'll drink more than that if socialising but that's maybe once or twice a month.

We used to drink more but now it just messes with my sleep too much, which is a shame but one of the joys of getting older.

I don't think this is funny. You wouldn't mock a diet thread...

How do you know I wouldn’t?!

Blarn · 23/10/2025 18:35

Dh and I used to drink about 3-4 times a week. This would be a couple of bottles of wine between us or perhaps 4 or 5 cans of beer. I've always been able to drink a lot but the last year I have been feeling too rough the next day, even a couple of beers sometimes just makes the whole next day shit, I am 40 and suspect this is just going to get worse. So recently we have been drinking maybe twice a week and one of those might be just one or two beers. It's nice, I think I prefer it, even though I do enjoy drinking it is just not worth it now.

AgentJohnson · 23/10/2025 18:38

Under 10 units a year, I never acquired the taste for alcohol. Malibu and pineapple accounts for all those units.

changedwoman123 · 23/10/2025 18:49

So who is drinking all the wine?

How much do you drink? Honestly!
changedwoman123 · 23/10/2025 18:59

And there are 55 million bottles sold each week!

mondaytosunday · 23/10/2025 19:06

I used to share a bottle with my DH on weekends. I rarely drank before I married at 40. After he passed away I opened a bottle I would finish a bottle, so yes three or four a week! I had spells when I stopped (Lent for example) and at the moment trying to lose weight so haven’t had any since September 1. Will at Christmas though! I know someone who drinks two bottles most days.

SeptemberOctober25 · 23/10/2025 19:10

Truthfully, I can't actually remember my last alcoholic drink so perhaps two years ago? In an average year I would be shocked if I go over five alcoholic drinks a year. Couldn't say tee total as I'm not against a drink if it arises and I fancy one but I am certainly not a drinker.

TheGrimSmile · 23/10/2025 19:21

A Baileys and a Snowball at Christmas. That's it. Can't drink since having kids and then early menopause. My body just can't take it. I've also had breast cancer so even if I could drink I probably wouldn't. I used to binge drink when I was younger, until my late 20s.

Mimilamore · 23/10/2025 19:22

Rarely drink Mon- Fri unless meeting friend for lunch but do like a glass with dinner on a Sunday, sometimes I’ll have another in the evening and sometimes what’s left goes in a casserole…

Barnbrack · 23/10/2025 19:24

That's a huge amount op
I'll have 1/2 drinks once a month or every 2 months but always at an occasion or whatever. The odd glass of wine once or twice year just for cosy nights in with husband and once or twice a year I'll get drunk on a night out so 2/3 cocktails/glasses of wine. I'm a lightweight
