To boycott Sainsbury’s for their mince packaging!!

Light hearted (ish) but I shop at Sainsbury’s and since they changed their mince packaging I’ve always hated it every time I buy it! It’d be a pain to buy only mince from a different shop so thinking it’s time to part ways!! It’s all so compact together and doesn’t cook as nicely anymore. Does anyone else have this issue or is it just me? Grin Or does anyone have any tips for cooking it?!

And it was contamination at the supplier not a decision by Tesco to put horsemeat in the pack.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 23/10/2025 20:12

I think the horse mince was in ready meals, lasagna rings a bell.

It's to reduce packaging and waste, so it's a bit 'damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Ah but it isn't. Its to reduce plastic packaging tax. They replaced recyclable plastic trays, with non recyclable film, because its reduces the tax. But the film/soft vacuum packaging is not recyclable.... do it is more waste. Its just about profit/tax.

This plastic film can be recycled in store, in their soft plastic recycling bin. I just wash mine off, let it dry and add to my huge bag of bags.

I only buy mince from Tesco because of this issue

Me too, only Tesco seem to do proper packaging now.

I actually quite like it because it's slightly more convenient to get it into the pan and it doesn't have that horrible wet bit of blood-soaked paper in any more.

This

XenoBitch · 23/10/2025 20:45

I just did a top up shop in Lidl and had a peek at the mince. It is only beef mince (and beef/pork mix) that is vac packed.
All other meats.... chicken, turkey, pork... are still in plastic trays.

CrushingOnRubies · 23/10/2025 20:52

I also dislike it. It goes all mushy. It’s fine for burgers and meatballs but when doing bolognese and you want a more defined strand of mince it doesn’t work as well

Ewww why do you want strands of meat in bolognaise?

Yes! Same here. I make a lovely chill con carne, and the wormy mince (you know what I mean) is the best. Not the squashed vac packed stuff that should be renamed paste instead of mince. It makes a huge difference.

RobertaFirmino · 23/10/2025 20:57

Can't say it bothers me. I just cut the packet open, press it out onto a plate and leave it for 5 minutes or so. It helps to get the air back into it to aid separation. I read that tip here on MN. Can't tell the difference when eating.

TaterTots68 · 23/10/2025 21:09

DH and I had a conversation about this a couple of days ago as Lidl use the same packaging (and it's over £7 for a large pack FFS). Anyway we said although it's a pita, we kind of like it a bit lumpy as it's a bit like meatballs...

TeddySchnauzer · 23/10/2025 21:09

@Mummytummy888@GandTtwiceNope M&S still use trays

It works perfectly fine in Bolognese 🙄

Exactly

@Skdj8448djfnot strands perhaps but defined not mush

@BallerinaRadiobecause it’s more meaty soup and it lacks substance as a result

TeddySchnauzer · 23/10/2025 21:10

And M&S

Morrisons were doing it in trays as well as Tesco & Marks - haven't bought any for a while though.

I didn't get on with the vac packs - it's too compressed.
I also saved the trays and used them as seed trays for starting off annual plants, so they get a re-use before recycling.

Timeforabitofpeace · 23/10/2025 21:44

Well they’re clearly not customer focused on this issue!

ChaliceinWonderland · 23/10/2025 21:47

Its disgusting. I get mine from the butchers,

TwistyTurnip · 23/10/2025 23:15

I don’t buy it. It’s gross.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 24/10/2025 00:27

XenoBitch · 23/10/2025 19:53

Off the top of my head, I think that was burgers.

Ah possibly, yes. So that’s alright then 😀

MayaPinion · 24/10/2025 05:23

Yes, I hate it too. It tastes simultaneously more gristly and mushy, no matter what I do with it. Waitrose have it about right. Theirs is packaged in a plastic bag type thing but it’s loose not vacuum packed, and there’s no plastic tray.

spoonbillstretford · 24/10/2025 05:30

I changed my weekly delivery to Tesco because of things like this. The fruit and veg are so much better at Tesco as well.

Zanzara · 24/10/2025 05:48

It's utterly revolting and I refuse to buy it.

A previous poster was right, it's to do with packaging taxes. Another hidden way your food prices are being forced up.

Revolting because exactly the same mince is a different consistency. Ok🤔

I and many others gong find it revolting at all. Many applaud it and Sainsbury’s attempt to reduce plastic. I’d like to see more.

Life is going to change and we’re going yo be inconvenienced due to global warming. There are far bigger things to worry about than consistency of mince due to reducing plastic which is very much needed.

Mygirlruby · 24/10/2025 06:44

Change is hard to bear. In 10 years time if we're all still eating minced beef, no-one will even remember this. Its like when Quality Street and Roses changed to paper wrappers people said they wouldn.t buy them
