Autumn is the worst season

I hate autumn with a passion and can’t believe others don’t feel the same.

I don’t live in New England but the North West
of (actual) England. Every day for the past week I have been soaked - either at school drop or pick up, if not both. The leaves are soaked so slippy and I fucking hate it.

And no to ‘dressing for the weather’ - the damp air kicks of my asthma. At least winter is usually cold and sunny

YANBU. The colours are lovely but once it's past early, turn-of-summer autumn, the light falls away dramatically which is depressing and everything is just wet and stinking. The air is so damp and you can smell everything decaying etc. Also all the pretty leaves and other gubbins fall off the trees and become terrifying slip and trip hazards to those of us who are fall prone and they're never dealt with quickly enough. My hyper mobile and very damaged ankle joints cause me a lot of worry this time of year! My mum and a very dear friend are chock full of hayfever, too.

Also every shop etc turns their heating system back on and gives me appalling sinus headaches. We're also in the awkward time where it's too mild for the heating to kick in fully but cold and damp enough for laundry not to dry for ages. I hate that. I lean pretty heavily into Halloween to make this part of the season fun and tolerable. As long as winter is dryer, it's tolerable to me plus a lot of fun gets planned in. Similarly, I can enjoy the return of light and life in spring. Summer is the best season for me!

oppweghysl · 23/10/2025 08:19

I think that’s more of a location issue than a seasonal
one, we’ve been getting our garden renovated this month (don’t ask), it’s our last week (5 week job) and today is only the second day that’s been cancelled due to weather. The other day was the storm we had a few weeks ago. I’ve never been so obsessed with rain as I have been this year 😂 I would really struggle to live somewhere with regularly worse weather. We are further south.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 23/10/2025 08:48

Relentless rain, location issue, worse weather 🙄

Is there an element of southern snobbery creeping in here, or do people really think the English Lake District is hell on earth? If so, then I wonder why it attracts so many tourists...🤔Do they come purely to gloat about not having to suffer our relentless rain? Because June is often pretty wet up here too.
I live in Lancashire and it's gorgeous. Too much rain or too much sun can be shite no matter where you live, but I don't think dissing the NW is really fair if you don't actually live here.

Icebreakhell · 23/10/2025 07:22

I love a dry autumn but I could not live in the NW, the relentless rain must be so hard.

What relentless rain?

Mahdjf · 23/10/2025 08:57

I'm so sorry in my head. I read it as "Autism is the worst season" and I got confused.

Right?

I live just outside the Lake District and we have the most stunning autumns. As someone who works outdoors year-round, I see all the weather (good and bad) and we definitely get more of the good.

Checkcheckout · 23/10/2025 08:59

Yes it’s crap. Wet and miserable, and spring/summer are so far away. I work outside and I hate trekking around in mud getting piss wet through. It’s also lurgy season, I’ve been struck down with the mother of all lurgies at the moment :(

AllThisTime · 23/10/2025 09:03

You are not unreasonable to not like it, especially as it causes you problems.

I quite like Autumn, all the colours, decorating our house for it and the cooler weather. My favourite season is Spring though.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 23/10/2025 09:04

Nope! It’s the best season! I look forward to it all summer

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 23/10/2025 09:04

Oh and I live in the NW too

Hotpolishcloth · 23/10/2025 09:06

I love Autumn because it is the gateway to Winter which I adore. I don't know many people like me though, counting the days until the clocks go back. People also don't like when you mention you love Winter. Akin to killing their first born.

The OP actually lives in the NW of England.

Zempy · 23/10/2025 09:06

I hate it. My arthritis is activated and I’m in lots of pain. I can’t leave the house because the damp air makes my hair look crazy.

I just light a candle and wait for it to pass.

devildeepbluesea · 23/10/2025 09:07

Completely agree. Autumn can go fuck itself, and take its oranges and yellows with it. They’re only colours. I prefer blue blue sky, yellow sun and green grass. Bring back summer.

saveforthat · 23/10/2025 09:08

Walks in the woods
Roast dinners
Open fires
Cashmere jumpers and boots.
I love autumn.

I know, some people take it as some kind of weird personal insult when you say you prefer cooler temperatures 🫣

I think @CoubousAndTourmaIet is referring to all the other comments about horrendous the NW must be even though they don’t actually live here.

EchoedSilence · 23/10/2025 09:11

It's crap. It's not all walks in the woods in your cashmere jumpers and boots. It's wet, miserable and dark.

Gastropod · 23/10/2025 09:11

Another autumn hater here! There seems to be this weird collective mythology surrounding autumn - I’m always hearing/reading about crisp days and apple picking and kicking through crunchy leaves but the reality is so far removed from that!

My autumn hating reasons in no particular order:

-Days are getting shorter, depressing dark mornings and evenings
-Weather can’t decide whether to be cold or warm, wet or dry so no matter what you are wearing it’s invariably the wrong thing
-Work is always a mare between September and December as a gazillion things all suddenly need to be done before year end
-Kids have a long school term ahead and are tired, stressed and fractious as a result
-Wet leaves are everywhere and they are at best, minging, and at worst, downright dangerous
-Cycling is rubbish at this time of year (see above)
-Christmas is still ages away and summer long forgotten so it’s just dreary
-I get weirdly sad seeing all the greenery and flowers fade and die off

I have lived in other parts of the world where autumn was glorious so I guess a lot of my hating comes down to the grey, miserable weather and short days. Once winter kicks in I’m fine though… because spring is always round the corner!

The one and only thing I truly love about autumn is the seasonal food - great time to go to the farmers market!

Are you saying the climate isn’t different across the country? OP is talking about lots of rain, we’ve not had lots of rain (until today!) it’s just facts, I couldn’t live up north, the weather is factually wetter and colder than where I am. I am sure lots of people wouldn’t want to live in the SW or a city like London in the summer. We’re not trying to personally offend you, we just have a weather preferences!

There’s a difference between having a weather preference and writing off huge swathes of the country as shit, though.

Well surely that depends on your lifestyle?! Ours is very much walks in the woods, jumpers (maybe not cashmere as I'm not loaded 😂), boots and big coats. But we live in a stunning area and spend a lot of time outside with the dogs.

I didn’t do that, I said “that’s a location issue” (and was quoted indirectly for saying so) I love autumn, but I’ve no doubt I would struggle with it somewhere wetter and colder. I’m not discounting the whole of the north or commenting on anything else about it, but the weather is generally not to my taste!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/10/2025 09:28

You’re not unreasonable to hate what you hate.

Autumn is my favourite season. Yes we get some rain but the bright autumn days more than make up for it in my eyes. And the autumn smell!

I don’t hate any of the seasons. I don’t like it when it’s very rainy (I think the worst time for rain is end of winter going into Spring?) or when it’s ridiculously hot.
