To be terrified that I have CIN 3 cells?

I have high risk HPV and have CIN 3 cells. I did get a LLETZ several months ago to try and remove them but have to wait and see if that worked. I feel like this is a death sentence and that I'm inevitably going to get cervical cancer sooner or later.
If I had CIN 3 cells and still have HPV, I'm going to keep getting these abnormal cells aren't I.

I had the same the surgery worked and I haven't got cervical cancer all my tests were negative for long enough that I'm fine now and only have to get tested the same as everyone it's not always bad 😊

It isn't a death sentence at all. I had CIN III in 2008. Had two loop excisions (the second to get a slightly wider margin) and have had completely clear smears ever since. I've been back on three-yearly smears for most of that time and just had the HPV test last time, which was negative. As I was told when I went for my first colposcopy, it takes a very long time for CIN to develop into cancer, and that almost exclusively happens in people who don't go for regular screenings - once you're in the system, they can keep on top of it, and if the abnormal cells do come back, they can sort them before they become a problem.

Thanks so much for the reassurance, I'm feeling really emotional about this. I have a child with special needs who really needs me, I think that's making the situation worse.
I'm also late 40s and have never had an abnormal smear in my life so this is very worrying for me, especially as last year my smear was normal and this year its progressed to CIN 3!

I know it is really worrying, but please be assured that the treatment you are receiving is curative.
I had CIN 3 in 1998, had a loop excision and have never had a recurrence. This is a very early "in situ" cancer that has not become invasive or spread so is easily cured. With regular follow up you should be fine.

I had ciin3 cells, I needed lletz and a colposcopy. It's been almost 11 years now and they've never returned.

My friend has had cervical cancer twice (shes 66), the first time was stage 2, (she was very behind on her smears) she had it removed, had radiation therapy for about 8 weeks and she was clear for 3 years when they spotted an abnormality which was a cancer regrowth, she went in to hospital as an out patient, had a very quick procedure to remove it and that was that. She has to go in regularly for check ups but she's been clear for about 2 years now.

My point is, chances are you won't get cervical cancer but even if you do at some point there is a lot they can do and it takes a very very long time of being unchecked before it's even close to a death sentence.

I had CIN 3 in 2006. I had the LLETZ procedure and have had normal smears ever since. Smears were yearly straight after the procedure, but moved to the standard 3 yearly a number of years ago. As above my recent smear was the HPV test and was negative. As I understand it the immune system is capable of clearing the HPV virus so just because you have it now doesn’t mean you will always have it.

I had CIN3 in 2005 after the birth of my first child. Loop excision to remove, then annual smears.

In 2010 abnormal cells found again, but I was pregnant with 3rd child, so colposcopy delayed until 6 weeks post-partum. All abnormal cells removed during the colposcopy. (I think it was CIN 1 or 2 this time.)

Annual smears resumed. 2015 abnormal cells found again! Colposcopy suggested, but I asked if there was an alternative, as I'd already had "chunks" removed from my cervix twice. Total abdominal hysterectomy including cervix, but leaving ovaries was the alternative. I went for this, as my family was complete and I was mid-thirties. Surgery was 2 weeks later and no regrets. (Not a rush due to cancer risk, but I had private health insurance coverage about to end, so it was good timing to have the surgery while still covered.)

It's been 10 years since the surgery. I no longer need smears, as the surgery removed all tissue at risk.

My story may sound drastic and I don't want to worry you. Yes, the cells can return BUT cancer is not inevitable. The important thing is keeping up with the smears as recommended. It takes years and years for abnormal cells to become cancer. Catching them early is the key.

I had CIN 3 in 2012, loop and colposcopy. All my smears since have been clear.
At the time I was so panicked, I had a 1 year old baby and felt like I was going to die and leave her motherless. But it's turned out ok.

Reframe it, they have found something at a very early stage and it's completely treatable. They will keep an eye on you now, and if it comes back, you can have a treatment again x

Gingerkittykat · 23/10/2025 03:37

Why have you not had your results back from the LLETZ? Have you had your follow up smear?

I had 2 treatments last year for CIN3 cells, and my follow up smear was clear and also HPV free meaning I will have 3 yearly smears now.

I know the time around having treatment and getting results is a scary time but please try and not panic and catastrophise.

Makingadecision · 23/10/2025 03:56

I had this in 1998! The surgery worked and I’ve only had negative smears since.
