sleek hair - teens

What is it with the total obsession young teen girls have atm with perfectly sleek hair? Dd spends hours in the morning and gets quite distressed and grumpy when the top of her hair isn't absolutely neat and perfect.

Is this some social media trend? Clean girl look? Has it always been thus but I did not have the memo? She isn't otherwise a very anxious character and fairly easy going, but hair has got to be amazing and sleek. Help me understand!

How can I help dd to be a bit more relaxed about this? She is 13 and in year 8.

Plenty of girls in my class in the 1990s were obsessed with getting their hair right in the mornings. Completely different look (mostly about the perfect volume and “bump” at the front) but no different in time really. They grew out of it in a year or so and became more relaxed (or possibly more competent at doing it quickly!)

Thank you @Talipesmum I was very much put hair up in a pony tail and get on with your day type of girl. Are you saying this is likely to get better in year 9, age 14?

Dd is stressing every morning. How can I help? Any products, brushes or a dressing table etc would that help? She has a tangle teezer and no mirror in her room. I'm probably not helping any of this and take any and all advice gratefully!

Any hair styles that look neat and are amuck and easy to do? Funnily enough she doesn't like a pony tail.

I spent hours perfecting the curls and huge fringe at that age. Must have gone through a can of harmony spray weekly. In the winter the curls used to form icicles.

She should definitely have a mirror in her room.

if she wants straight and sleek the best thing (and fastest) would be heat protector and straighteners or a hot air brush, but straighteners are easier to use.

Depending on hair type maybe also some serum to add shine and smooth.

And a paddle brush if her hair is long.

I work in a secondary school. We call year 9 & 10 the hair and make up years. Usually it gets less in year 11. My daughter is now 19 and has given up them both.
