Amazon to ditch packaging in the run up to Christmas

Heard the advert on the radio - Amazon are ditching packaging where possible, so whatever you order, should arrive in the manufacturers box, with your address label stuck on the side. So, let's say you order Sony headphones, the address label will be stuck to the Sony box. I'm all for wasting less, but AIBU to think that this is just a stupid idea?

A) The address label will be stuck to the product, which won't look great for gifting or even selling on. Also, if you return it, the labels don't come off, so what then?

B) In the run up to Christmas, it's fairly important that packages arrive in a concealed box or wrapper, especially if children are still little and around when the delivery man comes.

I wouldn't mind paying a little bit extra for a "concealed wrapping" option. But to just say no wrapping has put me right off.

that's just not true - after reading about it on FB I double-checked my next order, and there was nothing of the sort you could select.

Then you were buying something that doesn't already come in robust packaging, so they know they have to pack it themselves. This initiative only applies to products that don't need extra boxes.

I had this. You can just opt out, which I did, because it was a gift for someone living at the address - don't think you had to pay more, though.

And cutting their costs, increasing profits.

it will cost them a whole lot less in buying in cardboard packaging, and manpower (or robot power?) for packing boxes into boxes — even if they save just a few seconds for every customer that probably adds up !

So money

Works so well with things meant for stockings. 🤬

I literally just had this problem today - a lovely gift for a birthday and it's got a horrible Amazon label on it that I can't take off. It's really rubbish.

Try using a hairdryer to warm up the adhesive and gently peel the label off. It’s more difficult on cardboard rather than labels on something plastic but worth trying.

So shop in the high street!

What high Street? Dunno where u live but mine is broken. Where do you even go for toys?

Smyth’s - the massive toy shop. Or The entertainer. Or plenty of others.

We still have Glasgow fort and a bunch of smaller retail parks in the surrounding towns.

It's generally an option if something comes in a proper box, so household appliances, boxed toys, etc.

They claim it's because they care about the environment, it's not. It's because it's nearly Christmas and they know how annoying this will be for people - annoying enough that they'll pay £4-£10 for gift wrap to mitigate it.

I worked for Amazon, literally all they give a shit about is money, money, money.

Agree. It's all about money. Remember the tubeless toilet rolls. They claimed they were saving the environment by not using the cardboard tube. Well people mustn't have bought these toilet rolls and now tubeless are no more. They must think we are all stupid

I buy tubeless toilet rolls, they’re great!

I’ve pretty much ditched Amazon now for many reasons, the quality of their deliveries being one of them.

SpaceRaccoon · 23/10/2025 08:42

I would imagine many expensive items will start to go missing now.

Candleface · 23/10/2025 08:47

I quite like the Amazon packaging as it’s great for using again for vinted or whatever.

pinkfondu · 23/10/2025 08:54

You'll see a message on the product detail page and at checkout when an item might ship in the product packaging. If you're buying a gift or prefer your order to remain private, you can choose to add Amazon packaging for free with just one click at the checkout.

I mean a lot of people are stupid, that's why they keep doing this shit. Any time I come on a thread like this and say I worked for Amazon and I can tell you categorically without a shadow of a doubt that they don't give a single dusty fuck about the environment I still get people arguing with me because they've heard "reduced packaging" and believed what Amazon have told them.

Presumably they will use easy-peel labels. As for the second point, if this is really a major concern, you could always shop in person or use any online store other than Amazon.

I bought a craft item for my nieces birthday recently, it arrived with two extremely sticky labels directly on the box. I nearly sent it back , I tried to get the labels off but couldn’t, it looked awful.

I didn’t know this, thank you!

DiscoBeat · 23/10/2025 09:27

I think it's a good idea if you get the option, but for gifting I would rather not - I've had damaged boxes and recently when I ticked the 'it's a gift, package in outer box' option they ignored it and my teen son saw a surprise present.

TY78910 · 23/10/2025 09:38

It’s interesting as I’ve not seen anything on the news about this and I’ve just done some googling.

They have done this for a while, for example if I buy bay wipes they will stick the label on the cardboard box. That doesn’t bother me.

The gifts and smaller things, I’ve seen a change where they put more things in paper bags as opposed to boxes like they used to which means they’re re-thinking their prior strategy (putting a tiny item in a massive box), but there is nothing official on their websites, or even news articles to suggest that they’re thinking of just putting a shipping label on a box of Lego.

ApplebyArrows · 23/10/2025 10:05

I doubt it's about the environment, but it's obviously easier for Amazon not to have to put stuff in a box, and round Christmas they must get a lot more orders, so it's probably not just a nefarious scheme to make you buy gift wrap.

It doesn't bother me. I almost always end up throwing away the manufacturer's box anyway. And I already have no desire for parcels to go to my neighbours or be left on the doorstep so I either order to an Amazon locker or on days when I'll definitely be in.

MrsSkylerWhite · 23/10/2025 10:06

Good, about time. The waste is insane.
