Tesco/Sainsburys are not cheaper than Aldi

I’ve shopped at Aldi for awhile now, and I believe it to be the cheapest supermarket.

Someone told me they stopped shopping in Aldi and went to Tesco/Sainsburys and now save £40-50 a WEEK on their food shop. So surely if you’re saving that much the items must be significantly cheaper compared to Aldi, right? But when pressed they couldn’t give me a single item that was cheaper than Aldi. It was all Club card/nectar deals which come and go.

I am not debating quality, we all know sometimes Aldi quality isn’t as good as other brands but personally I think Aldi quality is pretty good overall, there’s only a few things I wouldn’t buy from there. I am also not debating that many supermarkets sell items for the EXACT same price.

If you believe another supermarket is cheaper than Aldi then I would genuinely love to know what you buy because I really need to save on my food shop.

Simple answer is depends what you buy. I find asda is very expensive for me. Aldi isn't cheap either ok what I buy. A mix of tesco and lidl are the cheapest for me with a Morrison trip every couple of weeks.

But the club card points do give you actual saving on things so I think it is fair to include those. Also how do you do all your shopping at Aldi? They have such a limited range. Once you have to go to multiple places you then spend more money on time/travel.

Our Aldi is big and I don’t have to shop elsewhere.

I couldn’t do a full shop at either Aldi or Lidl
We are very lucky and have a huge choice of supermarkets very close by including the lovely Booths
I prefer to shop weekly in person - so one week we will go to Lidl and then carry on to nearest sainsburys to get rest of things needed, alternate week we do Aldi then Tesco
If I’m shopping for elderly DM her nearest are Aldi then Morrisons
I also shop occasionally at B and M, home bargains etc
Generally have an idea of who stocks what at best price eg every 3 months I go to savers and stock up on toothpaste deodorant etc as they have the brands I prefer at lowest price
I also go to places like Booths and Waitrose at best yellow sticker times if nearby
DS does good to go bags but I am very restricted due to food intolerances and allergies so would struggle with the concept of random items!

For people who say they buy everything at Aldi or Lidl - tonight I had to go elsewhere to get oyster mushrooms, tinned rhubarb, GF pitta bread, branded cat food (he’s fussy), some branded drinks and a few other bits that they should have had but the shelves were empty!

Our shop is always cheaper at Tesco so we do tend to stick with them, I think it just depends what you buy.

What items work out cheaper for you from Tesco?

Aldi treat their customers like dirt. Aldi Caterham check everyone’s bags as if everyone us a thief rather than investing in security staff. Terrible

I can’t be bothered with Aldi/Lidl as I don’t think I could do a full shop. I shop at a massive Sainsbury’s because it’s the closest big supermarket- also handy because it has a clothes and home section etc and an Argos. I’d shop at a big Tesco or Asda if they were closest.

I also like the scan & shop at Sainsbury’s and have a longest commute so get all my petrol from there too. Works out well as I build up nectar points & get the deals etc
