Bette Davis - they don’t make them like her any more

Channel flicking I’ve stumbled on a documentary about Bette Davis, which includes excerpts of an interview with her which must be from the late 70s / early 80s.

It’s totally sucked me in - what an amazing woman. So articulate and ballsy and clear about who she is and what she wanted. Truly committed to her profession and art.

Amazing. Am I unreasonable to think they just don’t make stars like her any more?

Sorry, but the autocorrect in your thread title has really made me laugh! 😂

Haha! I only noticed it after - I’ve asked for it to be amended.

David does need to be better though 🤣

She's amazing isn't she?
I've been a fan of her since I was a little girl.
All about Eve is one of my all time favourite films.

Zov · 20/10/2025 22:24

Awwww, I thought this was a thread about David Beckham! 😆

I did like Bette Davis though! 😃

Zov · 20/10/2025 22:25

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane is brilliant. She is fab in that. But the French and Saunders spoof is exquisite. 😆

I had a miserable cold at the weekend, and DH and DS were both away on the Saturday when my plans were cancelled because of rain. There was a double bill of Now, Voyager and Dark Victory on BBC when I happened to turn on the tv and I lit the fire, watched straight through, broke for some toast, and continued with All About Eve. I recommend it as a way to spend a rainy Saturday.

She is a legend.

😂😂 I thought it may be a Drag name

curtaintwitcher78 · 20/10/2025 22:38

There should be a couple of her films on the BBC iPlayer currently, because there was a double bill on Saturday. I love her in Now, Voyager.

HedwigEliza · 20/10/2025 22:51

Was it the interview with Dick Cavett? I re-watch it every so often. Fantastic viewing! So much fun. What an amazing woman.

YumYa · 20/10/2025 22:53

What was the interview on?

Yes she was a powerful force. An amazing actress.

Yes — it was Now, Voyager and Dark Victory. I’d had no idea they were on, just happened to switch on BBC near the start of Now, Voyager when Charlotte is having her nervous collapse over the teacups when mean little June teases her about having a hangover, and stayed watching, mesmerised, and was delighted when Dark Victory came on straight after!

I think the scene when the transformed, popular Charlotte disembarks from the cruise ship, looking exquisite and being bade fond farewells by other passengers, in front of Lisa and June, who don’t initially recognise her, is my favourite ‘revenge of the downtrodden’ scene in all of cinema. Like a much more satisfying version of Julia Roberts saying ‘Big mistake. Huge’ in the boutique in Pretty Woman.

Yes, I believe the kids call it a glow-up, but it was so much more. Her mother no longer had any power over her.
Shame the dude couldn't leave his wife so they could be other, but hey, let's not ask for the moon 😉

I've just sent for Dangerous on dvd as can't find it to stream.

Alconleigh · 21/10/2025 18:06

I now have Bette Davis Eyes on the IJ. Never a bad thing.

scandinavianyellow · 23/10/2025 20:09

Thank you for starting this thread OP. I had a very enjoyable double bill myself and now loooking for more BD inspiration

MinnieCauldwell · 23/10/2025 20:18

My 2 favourites are Now, Voyager and a film where she played a twin. The twin drowns when they are sailing and everyone thinks she is the other one, oh the drama!😱

A Stolen Life

If you watch nothing else, do watch the bit 10 minutes in…

One of the best interviews Michael Parkinson ever did.

I love her too. Have you read her autobiography, 'The Lonely Life'? You can read it for free on the Internet Archive website, along with the follow-up, 'This n' That'.

Just read this and ordered This n that from the library. They don't have the lonely life available anywhere and it's really expensive to buy.
