Awkward ‘Return to work’ with my manager

Rachell88 · 20/10/2025 20:51

I had a rare few days off work last week due to a sickness bug. Return to work meeting with my
manager earlier on teams as per policy.

I just said high level what I was off with. He said he’d type the form up and asked if I wanted to read the notes. He then went ‘don’t worry, I won’t say you were pissing out of your arse’ and started chuckling.

It’s maybe me still feeling a bit groggy. But I feel like that was really odd to say? He has only been my manager a couple of months and we don’t have that sort of relationship…

Unless he has form for being inappropriate I would let this one slide. But make a note of it via dated email just in case it is the start of a trend and him testing your boundaries.

Makingadecision · 20/10/2025 20:57

I’d reply and say for the record I had a gastric infection/ virus and I was not “p*ssing out my arse” as you suggested on the return to work meeting

Finsburyfancy · 20/10/2025 21:38

This isn't a big deal. Relax.

FlyingCarpetRide · 20/10/2025 21:45

Yeah that is a bit odd for a return to work interview. Not really very professional, not funny either. I think you could give him the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes I say things in slightly awkward settings to break tension and mis-read the room. Like other pp say, make a note and move on. But yeah essentially definitely off-key.

ohyesido · 20/10/2025 22:08

I wouldn’t like that at all and would definitely raise an eyebrow

RoseAlone · 20/10/2025 22:10

You're being massively overly sensitive

Rustymoo · 20/10/2025 22:18

You’re being over sensitive. I’d have replied something like yeah, I could have shit through the eye of a needle!

Pudmyboy · 20/10/2025 22:21

Definitely not something your manager should have said. Work colleagues, maybe, but not manager. Very unprofessional.

Andregroup · 20/10/2025 22:23

I wouldn't have liked that either. Unprofessional and rude. Make a note of date/time, and monitor for future.

YouMightLikeCats · 20/10/2025 22:29

Surprised at people saying this wouldn't raise an eyebrow, but I guess workplaces vary drastically! Mine is very professional and someone coming out with that would be really quite weird. And horrible.

It was a joke.

Marmalade71 · 21/10/2025 05:19

It’s a bit over familiar but honestly not a biggie. Unless part of a pattern of inappropriate comments, not one to over think surely?

Zanatdy · 21/10/2025 05:24

Not really appropriate but not something i’d take further.

spoonbillstretford · 21/10/2025 05:25

I'd make a mental note that he's wont to be an unprofessional dick. I would certainly like to check what he wrote, and keep a record.

Agix · 21/10/2025 05:35

I consider myself quite an over sensitive person, but this wouldnt bother me. My manager is really casual though, so maybe just gotten used to it... Much prefer it this way, not sure how I could work in a really stuffy uptight environment.

pinkbackground · 21/10/2025 05:37

It’s just a silly comment. I’d leave it.

thisishowloween · 21/10/2025 07:21

He was just trying to lighten the mood.

It wouldn’t bother me 🤷‍♀️

HaroldMeaker · 21/10/2025 07:26

Unprofessional and a massive twat. I wouldn’t like this either op.

lemonraspberry · 21/10/2025 07:33

Unprofessional but was probably a very clumsy attempt at trying to lighten an awkward situation (for him).
