Someone picked up my money

Annnahh · 20/10/2025 18:08

Was walking today and I had a £10 note in my bag, went to get something out my bag and it was there but when I got something out I must have dropped it. 3 men were behind and I heard one say ‘keep walking, keep walking’. When I went into the shop with my little one. So presuming they took saw me drop it and took it. DP says it’s my fault and I was careless. Aibu to think they shouldn’t have took it and it wasn’t my fault

‘It wasn’t my fault’. It’s not really a big sin but if you think there was fault in dropping the money, whose was it if not you?

JudgeBread · 20/10/2025 21:22

Two things can be true at the same time. You were careless and they were dishonest.

SleepingisanArt · 20/10/2025 21:26

You have assumed that the men took it but you don't know for certain. Did you even retrace your steps to look for it? You have to take some responsibility for your own actions. I have a purse (yes I'm old!!) but my children who rarely carry cash either tuck notes into their phone cases or have a small zipped wallet which fits into a front pocket of jeans or the inside pocket of a bag (if they are carrying one).

TheignT · 20/10/2025 21:28

Theft by finding, it is an offence but I can't see anyone investigating it. Fact remains they are thieves.

MoominMai · 20/10/2025 21:50

Well obviously it was your fault, accident or whatever terminology you want to use. I’m surprised you’re surprised that a tenner, particularly in this day and age, wasn’t returned to you by a stranger after it floated out your bag. The silver lining is at least you’ll be more careful and thank goodness it wasn’t a twenty or higher!

steff13 · 20/10/2025 21:54

Tanya285 · 20/10/2025 20:11

What so they can keep it instead?

If they saw you drop it then it was horrible that they didn't return it OP. But if I just found a random tenner then I would keep it or donate it to charity.

I found a wad of cash on the floor at my local grocery store. I don't remember the exact amount, but it was over $200. I turned it in at the customer service desk, and they said they'd hold it for 30 days and if no one claimed it, it was mine. Lo and behold, 30 days later they called me and told me no one had claimed and I could come pick it up.

FOJN · 20/10/2025 22:02

However likely it is that the men behind the OP saw her drop the £10, picked it up and kept it there is no concrete evidence it was them. The OP was careless and lost some money. It's unfortunate but she does have the power to make sure it doesn't happen again. It's not victim blaming to say it would have been less likely to happen if the OP had secured the money inside her bag. The money would still have been lost whether someone picked it up or not. It could just as easily have been blown away after it had fallen out of OP's bag.

Pudmyboy · 20/10/2025 22:18

Think one of the issues is the notes (in the UK anyway) are very 'springy' and unless pinned down in a purse or similar are very easy to lose because of this. The old paper notes could be folded and would usually stay 'put'.

myglowupera · 20/10/2025 19:20

They didn’t take it by force but they blatantly kept it knowing exactly who it belonged to. Next step down from mugging in my opinion.
It’s very different if you find a tenner and you have no idea who it belongs to. They also saw that she had a young child with her and that could have been a tenner for stuff for her child. It’s just scummy behaviour.

But I can see people are blaming OP for actions of someone else. Nice bit of victim blaming on this thread.

I had this once I passed my 4 year old £10 as she was upset so I showed her the money and explained she could spend it. She must have dropped it Inside an empty changing room. Someone came into that one my little
gkrl noticed an was hysterical loud and several other women were asking what was wrong and in the end a woman even gave £10 to her off her own back just to make her happy. The woman in said changing room just stared at us. It was my fault for giving it but these women all knew who had lost it and could hear the emotion.

Loulou4022 · 19/04/2026 09:16

Yes the men dishonest however you were careless! If £10 is a lot of money to you then you need to take more care of it and make sure it’s zipped into an inside pocket of your bag or in a purse or the back of your phone!

If they actually saw the £10 fall from your bag and they kept it rather than alerting you (which you can't know for certain), then I think that's technically theft. There was a case a few years ago where a woman pocketed £20 she'd found on the floor of a shop, and she ended up being charged and convicted of theft. You have to make a reasonable attempt to return the item to the owner - so in that case, alerting the shop staff who could have checked CCTV to see who dropped it.

She dropped it outside, no one is going to be checking cctv for a tenner.

iamfedupwiththis · 19/04/2026 09:25

and it wasn’t my fault

Pray tell, who's fault was it?

Oh and saying it wasn't your fault makes you sound about 10!

The OP isn't a victim! Stop being melodramatic

People aren't shaming there, they are pointing out she is foolish.

@Annnahh won't be back anyway

There was a case - really - do you have the evidence of this case? Or are you just making things up?

Sure, I’m not suggesting that she should have called the police. Im just saying (to the people who are putting the entire blame on the OP) that technically it could be considered theft, if it happened as OP suspects.

If you find a wallet on the pavement, you can’t just keep it, you look to see if there’s any ID and then try to locate the owner. And if you see a £10 note actually falling out of someone’s bag, you can’t just keep that, you attract their attention and hand it back to them. You take whatever reasonable steps you can to return the property to its owner, before thinking about keeping it.

Thank you Smile

I didn’t make it up @iamfedupwiththis although it’s obviously a very unusual case, there was a lot of talk about it at the time. Here’s an interview the woman gave: dailym.ai/2mwgnba

dudsville · 19/04/2026 12:19

If someone saw you drop it and they picked it up and kept it, then they're just freshly out of the swamp in terms of social development. Your husband shouldn't turn this on you, this shouldn't come between you. You made an easy to make mistake and were taken advantage of and that's not nice.
