Can anyone tell me what this is???? I’ve had about 6 or 7 crawling across my desk today and am slightly concerned they may be cockroaches. I should add I work in a garden office so would only have to burn that down and not the whole house if it is

Can anyone identify this bug????

ChatGPT reckons it’s a rove beetle

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 16:56

i haven’t heard of one of those. Everything I looked up said a roach

fairybaby · 20/10/2025 16:56

Looks like a roach to me. How big is it?

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 16:57

Have had a look at the rove beetle and I don’t think it’s as the antenna are too short.

think I may finish work early today

Looks like a cockroach to me and I've lived in a cockroach infested hellhole. Get something to sort them asap. You don't want them overrunning your office😬

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 16:58

They are not vey big. Maybe a couple of cm.

Oh blimey. I was really hoping it was some kind of friendly beetle. It’s odd as we don’t have any food down here. So goodness knows where they have come from

OP posts:
HansBanans · 20/10/2025 17:00

I googled rove beetle after and agreed it doesn’t look the same. Sorry!

goingtotown · 20/10/2025 17:01

Google lens says cockroach.

NeverCouldGetTheHangOfThursdays · 20/10/2025 17:02

Looks like a German cockroach.

strawgoh · 20/10/2025 17:03

@totallyfrusted There's a wildlife, nature and conservation board on MN, maybe ask on there.

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 17:04

Thank you I didn’t know that board existed. I shall give it a try.

I've lived somewhere with cockroaches (New Zealand) and it looks like that, sorry! But you're lucky they're only a couple of centimetres and not 6! Had a great experience in a shower in Bali... 😬

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 17:20

I’ve had an unfortunate experience with them in Africa while in the bathroom and it’s not something I want to have to relive 😩

roach getting ready to drop some eggs

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 17:30

I think I may be working from the kitchen table tomorrow

Co-pilot says it's a ground bug and is harmless. Definitely not a cockroach!

Puppypower83 · 20/10/2025 17:33

i found one or two of these in my house and freaked out!!
I think it's a type of wood cockroach which would make sense being that it's in your garden!

Its called something like Ectobius vittiventris. Let me try and find it, I found someone who identified it on Reddit !

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 17:43

That makes me feel better. I can cope with them being harmless bugs

OP posts:
totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 17:44

I’ve sent a picture to a local pest control person so I’ll let you know what he says

OP posts:
Puppypower83 · 20/10/2025 18:04

Oh I've found the old Reddit post - someone suggested it was Planuncus tingitanus which is kind of a catch all term for unspecified roaches or something that tend to live outside in gardens etc. We have a garage covered in ivy and I think they breed there.
A pest control person could easily come back and say you need them exterminated and try and charge you lots of money 😶good luck!

totallyfrusted · 20/10/2025 18:10

thank you. I shall go and have a look. Feeling very itchy tonight

Pharazon · 20/10/2025 18:18

Can you get a better photo? And also specify what country you are in. ChatGPT and the like are useless for this as they don’t have enough information such as location and size.

Pharazon · 20/10/2025 18:24

Hmm, if you are in the uk perhaps a dusky cockroach (Ectobius lapponicus) with an egg case? They are harmless like all our native cockroaches as they prefer to live outdoors.
