Sorry if I’m coming across dense here but how do I go about obtaining the MAP.

Im not in a position to pay for it, ive read conflicting stories re weight limit and im 13 stone.

Ive had unprotected sex last night and this morning and according to FLO its day 3 of my fertile window with ovulation expected Tuesday

what is my best solution here as I really do not want a pregnancy

Go to a pharmacy

YorkiePud25 · 19/10/2025 22:10

Are you in England? My understanding is you can get it free from a pharmacy

Arlanymor · 19/10/2025 22:10

Pharmacy - do you have a Boots near you?

MyDogHumpsThings · 19/10/2025 22:11

If you can’t pay, the gp should be able to prescribe it

skippy67 · 19/10/2025 22:11

Boots.

BlakeCarrington · 19/10/2025 22:11

Any chemist. Go in and ask them.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 19/10/2025 22:11

Go to a pharmacy first thing in the morning. I think you will need to pay for it though.

If you really can’t pay for it then go straight to a sexual health clinic. Like FIRST THING tomorrow.

It’s not free.

Danikm151 · 19/10/2025 22:13

Head to a pharmacy that offers it- ideally you should have gone today. It can be prescribed there and then.
Some pharmacies can’t offer it and will signpost you to where.

it all depends on where you live- big city centre with a boots- go there- small village it’s gonna be harder

OswaldCobblepot · 19/10/2025 22:14

I don't think there's a weight limit. I took it years ago and I was certainly over 13 stone then. I got it from a walk in centre.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 19/10/2025 22:16

IT IS NOT FREE UNLESS PRESCRIBED.

@Quickquestion228 go to GP to get a prescription if you cant pay or go to a sexual health clinic who can prescribe then and there.

Go first thing in the morning.

FluffletheMeow · 19/10/2025 22:18

Pharmacy, price is not crazy, think I paid about £20 (about 15 years ago).
If you really can't do that I don't know, I'd start with calling the GP who might point you in the direction of a sexual health clinic.
Pregnancy test in a couple of weeks.

ThisjobisNotforme · 19/10/2025 22:19

What area are you?

GreenFrogYellow · 19/10/2025 22:19

Call 111, ooh gp can prescribe remotely.

It’s not a weight limit as such, but an issue of effectiveness.

FieryA · 19/10/2025 22:22

You really should have gone to a pharmacy or Boots clinic and gotten more information. Try and get an urgent appointment with your local sexual health clinic tomorrow. Check what time their slot opens on their website and call them.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 19/10/2025 22:23

Prescriptions are not free tho are they - unless over 60 in England or on some benefits ? They may be free in Scotland ?

Think it’s around £30 now.

OP, if your app says you’re 1 day away from ovulation, that’s not a big margin for error.

The morning after pill mainly works by stopping ovulation, so if you had already ovulated, it won’t be effective (though they will still give it to you just in case you haven’t). Boots/pharmacy will charge you unless you’re under a certain age (25?).

You can get a IUD / coil fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex at any point in your cycle, it’s very effective. Your best bet would be to contact your local sexual health clinic and say you need a coil fitted as emergency contraception. They can also issue MAP for free. You can decide when you’re there if you’re not sure which to go for.

From NHS website...

Where to get the emergency contraceptive pill
You can get free emergency contraception from:

most sexual health clinics, also called family planning or contraception clinics
most GP surgeries
some NHS walk-in centres
some young people’s services (call the national sexual health helpline on 0300 123 7123 for more information)
pharmacies that offer NHS emergency contraception services
Many pharmacies sell the emergency contraceptive pill in their shops and online

They're definitely free in Wales.

Miserable1 · 19/10/2025 22:56

I'm in Wales, so may be different. However there are certain pharmacies that offer the MAP for free. If you go onto the NHS website you can select "pharmacies" and filter by the services they offer. Free emergency contraception will be listed if the pharmacy offers it.

Ellaone · 19/10/2025 22:59

hi sexual health nurse here
you are probably seeing conflicting info re weight as there are two types of oral emergency contraceptive ( one being my username ) - one does have a potential to not work as well if you are over a certain weight but don’t worry as we would usually give a double dose if weight is higher. The other one there is no weight restriction, issue of the meds will depend on medical history as well as menstrual and sexual history.
it should be free but some pharmacies do charge so it’s worth calling to check before attending otherwise
gp, sexual health services or 111 can arrange - worth noting that again dependent on histories an emergency copper coil is “gold standard” as a pp has also stated. GP or sexual health can help with this - just be sure to access as quickly as possible for whatever you decide as the sooner the better due to how the emergency contraception works - hope that helps

Northerngirl821 · 19/10/2025 23:02

Call 111. You might be able to get an appointment with an out of hours GP who can dispense it to you tonight (my local hospital has this service up until midnight every night).

The longer you wait, the less chance it will be effective.
