To think the greed behind these is bizarre?

I was looking for some poster art and came across a lot of stuff like this screenshot. It seems there are a literal ton of these floating around on Etsy and large online markets. They seem to be claiming to be a renowned painter (Gustav Klimt in this case) yet none of the works are by them!

I presume the images are AI generated, since if anyone actually painted them they'd be happy to put their own name on them instead of Klimt!

What bothers me is that young people searching online to discover artists and art history will not know what's real or not in this chaos. It's weirdly inappropriate and misleading.

It just seems a bit gross, anyone else come across anything like this?

Welcome to the world of AI. This is just the start.

Grifters, plagiarists, charlatans and hucksters ahoy!

Well I feel sorry for the person who might pay £40 for a poster thinking it was a famous artist. Original artist's prints are only going for £20 at best.

Could become quite embarrassing during a dinner party Grin

"Would you look at our new Klimt, isn't it darling?"

Odd.

Etsy seems to be having a real quality control problem - so much of the stuff on there is now clearly mass produced crap, which isn’t really the point of it surely…?

It's all about money, who cares if they can reel in the fees?

I agree, It used to be genuine artists works now it's all mass produced (bought from temu) shite

It's deeply insulting to the potential buyer.
I studied art history, so recognised it was all quite off, same with the plethora of William Morris, Van Gogh and Matisse prints, not to mention Warhol, and many other, global artists, all long since deceased (so I presume copyright free).

But this isn't an issue of copyright - they are using the computer to generate the 'new' image and making a print. It's a tough marketplace, so slapping a famous name on the poster will bump it up in searches. It's extremely cynical.

They are aiming this slop at people who like nice artworks but don't have much interest in the history or aren't aware of different artists' genuine works. Not everyone studies art and they shouldn't feel ashamed of that. It's deceitful and pretty much goes against trades description. I guess it's like the Wild West of the internet. So yeh, they're laughing at the customer, how nice.
