They’re toxic and horrible, end up in the bin, total waste and the parts are a danger around toddler siblings.

You don’t have to buy it, you have one opinion, they have another. You’ve added to my point that most big name retailers charge way too much per item, hence why people are also turning to Vinted. I don’t know any adults who would have used either 20 years ago, as they could afford to shop in actual shops in town.

Edited

Most big retailers have to pay the minimum wage and charge you vat. You know so we can have public services etc!

Please don't buy seeds or random books.

Or what

AliasGrape · 19/10/2025 20:34

My daughter loves a bag of tat - it doesn’t get chucked away here, I keep a few random tat bags/ boxes stashed away to break out occasionally when she’s bored or shove in a bag for if we’re on a long journey or eating out for example. Or we use it to play toy shops with.

That said; we went with sweet cones and a (full size) bubble wand at her last party because I can see both sides of the argument and also didn’t want to spend £50 on tat but also didn’t want to use Temu. Not that my stuff from the Works was morally superior probably!

I don’t recall main high street names charging upwards of £60 for staple items of clothing 10 years ago. Let’s agree to disagree.

I'm sure cheaper alternatives are available on the high street. Just as I know there was plenty for sale for more than £60 10 years ago.

Yes! The ‘Tat Box’- it’s a ‘Five Minute Mum’ classic!

This stuff isn’t actually thrown away in our house either. Mine coloured and decorated old shoe boxes with stickers, then they fill them with never-ending tat from party bags, magazines, crackers, trick or treating, etc. They are one of their most played with things! Really useful for rainy days/unwell days.

Bambamhoohoo · 19/10/2025 20:37

Why would the high street be any better though? Paying more money doesn’t shield you from the Chinese or the environmental impacts

We clearly visit different shops/want different items- I repeat, let’s agree to disagree. We don’t all have to agree in life! People on here really struggle with that 😂

Safer.

Maybe on some toys, but the posters above are talking about clothes now.

besides, I really can’t say the danger of Temu tat seems to be posing a real threat to British children. Seems a bit drama llama tbh

It's not really a matter of opinion though. High street prices aren't really debatable. Which staple do you think is £60 or more? If you just want to shop on temu, go ahead. There's no point making stuff up to justify it.

Was it "drama llama" to ban BPA in baby bottles?

I guess it's only a risk of toxic chemicals, internal injuries or death from magnets and button batteries, strangulation risk.
I don't know why we bother have safety standards at all actually?

Clothes from temu/SHEIN are constantly recalled for safety concerns with children. They are made with fastenings that come loose, ties that could strangle children, made with unsafe dyes or fabric that is hugely flammable. It takes seconds to read about the dangers of these things, I really can’t fathom why parents would risk their children for the sake of some cheap stuff.

LilyCanna · 19/10/2025 20:43

Maybe not for very young kids, but I think the best way to minimise the plastic crap in party bags is to fill them with sweets and chocolate. Happy kids, less plastic in landfill, not much effort required!

Is that something Temu was integral to? 🤨

PeachyKoala · 19/10/2025 20:47

Wasn't there a warning about Temu and Shein products containing unsafe levels of lead? For that alone I wouldn't touch either with a barge pole.

Actual recalls? Are you sure? Surely if they’re not regulated they don’t need to bother recalling their defective clothes?! How does a purchaser find out about their recall?

Bambamhoohoo · 19/10/2025 20:46

Well obviously not. Which is exactly my point. BPA, lead and other fun stuff may or may not be in anything you buy from there.

I don’t know but just this morning I saw an article about huel having lead 😭 slightly random

I’m mainly concerned by the labour tbh.

As abhorrent as child labour is, at least it only affects one generation of children at a time.

The plastic (and wooden, from non-certified sustainable wood sources) tat in this thread will still be around when our grandchildren are dead.

Enough toys exist.

As they put it in one documentary, you can't throw things away. There is no away, it all stays on the planet.

You can have a look at the governments list recalls if you are really interested. They enforce recalls on lots of unsafe products.

VikaOlson · 19/10/2025 20:29

Just because they use photos of Enid Blyton box sets or Lego or Playmobil on their site does not mean you're getting the same product you'd buy in an actual shop.

It's dangerous to buy unregulated, untested toys from Temu/ebay/Amazon.
Children do get badly injured and die from things like unsafe electronics, button batteries, strong magnets.
Even things like ribbons on baby toys - Argos or Smyths have to meet safety standards to ensure the ribbon isn't so long as it could strangle a baby.
The 'exact same product' at 10% of the price from Temu will not have had any safety testing.

So if I ordered the box set of Enid Blyton books from Temu what would they send me?
They're books 🤷
I agree you shouldn't be buying random brands you've not really looked closely at but the whole point of this thread is the OP saying not to buy from about Temu. Which is fine - but it's no different to buying from eBay, Amazon, AliExpress or your local market stall if you are buying small cheap toys.
My argument is it's not where you buy from - it's WHAT you buy for party bags.

Needmorelego · 19/10/2025 21:15

(Not sure about Shein).

so if I buy from SHEIN I have to regularly check the government’s recall list to see if my hauls are on there? Really!??

can you blame the public for buying them, if this is really true?
