You're certainly not alone OP. But if the title is in reference to another thread, this will swiftly be deleted at TAATs aren't allowed.

There's not much to go on here...

Are you talking primary school age children and paying for before/after school?

Yes I can’t really afford care of any kind so am only working one day a week - Saturday atm while my DP worked full time

Could you work nights or evenings?

What is a TAAT’s?

ishimbob · 19/10/2025 14:41

How much is your wraparound care? Do you have a lot of children?

Cappuccino5 · 19/10/2025 14:41

It was cheaper for us to send DD to a private prep school (with longer hours) than pay for wrap around care. It is genuinely madness.

But surely if you went full time you could afford the care?

You won't need it forever and you'll have your foot up the ladder?

I am surprised it's unaffordable with 2. We pay £20 a day per child for breakfast and after school club, it would be £16 for just after school club if you or your DH could manage the drop offs. With tax free childcare, even on minimum wage, that would still leave you with a fair amount

But that's life. You made a decision to have children so must have had some sort of plan in place for what would happen when they started school?

Back in the 1980s my best friends parents worked shifts that helped cover school pick ups etc... for 6 years until they were big enough to home on their own. It's what people have always done. At least nowadays most schools do actually have breakfast and after school clubs. Some even offer it free.

I changed career and now teach so I have all school holidays off as my previous career wasn't child friendly. My kids attend breakfast and after school club and I just factor this into earnings.

Surely you could also work evenings? Or work in a school?

Istanbol · 19/10/2025 14:54

With tax-free childcare you can get 20% off the costs of childcare and you income will be more. Take a look at beststartinlife.gov.uk

Not sure how your maths works op. I live in a really expensive area and wrap would be about 50 quid a day for two kids - but you'd get 20% off with tax free childcare so more like 40 quid a day.

Minimum wage is 12.21. If you work a typical 37 hour week, you earn about £23,800. After tax & a 5% pension contribution, it works out as £383 a week. Its far more than the cost of wraparound and gets you in the door for when kids are older. Even if you have to pay £100 a week transport you're still better off.

You are pretty much always better off working when kids are in school, unless you've got 4+ kids.

40weeksmummy · 19/10/2025 15:06

Omg,I can relate.
My first born is SEN - I could honestly punch anyone to face if someone would say me AGAIN - " oh, don't you think about coming back to work?"
Every single childminder charged us double for SEN. There is "magically " no free spaces at breakfast or after school club. They know my child will piss them off in first 30 seconds.
Yes, I can't afford childcare too.

I worked evenings and weekends when mine were little.

It depends. For example, my husband has mixed rota, sometimes his week looks like this, and it can change any minute too:
Monday 7am-5pm
Tuesday 10am-7pm
Wednesday 6pm-2am etc
With no family help - we are in sh*t.
It's very easy to say -" Change jobs, do nights, etc".

But didn’t you know how expensive childcare was after the first was born? I didn’t when DD was tiny, when I found out it was the same as our mortgage for a 3 bed in south london, my opinion of whether we could afford two kids changed. If I were you I’d go back full time, children don’t get cheaper as they get older.
