Asbestos in j&j powder

I am so so upset. i have heard of that powder causing some types of cancers. I used it a lot on my first baby, before i knew about this. Fucking thing has asbestos in it? My dad died from mesothelioma few months ago. Mesothelioma is causef by asbestos, it was unhuman, slow death. What if i infected my own child with it. I am broken into pieces

I used loads of it as a child, as a teen I used it as face powder. So that is a worry re lungs. I used it on my children too. It’s very scary, I am sorry for your loss OP.

KittyEckersley · 16/10/2025 22:00

It is awful. I just wanted to add that anything which is a powder can be breathed into the lungs and is a cancer risk. So, even though baby powder no longer contains talc, it is still dangerous.

TheSilentSister · 16/10/2025 22:00

My DF died of lung cancer. One of things my DM moaned about was my DF covering himself in talking powder after a bath. He'd done it for years.
It's too late for us but there is a group law suit going around. Look it up.
I'm so grateful that I never used it myself or on DS, couldn't stand the dustiness of it, which turns out to be a bloody good reason!

tothesea · 16/10/2025 22:12

I remember my SIL telling me talcum powder shouldn’t be used on babies anymore, due to cancer risk, when my nephew was born and he is 26 now. HV made it very clear to me as well when I had my own child 20 years ago. I’m very surprised people don’t know about this.

TheSilentSister · 16/10/2025 22:26

Documentary on it right now. BBC

Bingbangboo · 16/10/2025 22:39

I haven't watched the documentary but wouldn't you expect more cases of mesothelioma as a direct result of talc use if it is as harmful as is being suggested? Hundreds of thousands of parents used it liberally on babies and themselves every day.

How are the people who are part of the law suit proving that it was talc exposure alone that caused their cancer? In our family my grandfather was found to have mesothelioma in his lungs, although it wasn't his cause of death. He worked in a car manufacturing plant where asbestos was used in the brakes.

I have worked in an office where the dangerous form of asbestos was found in the ceiling tiles and I also worked for a while in a listed building that is currently being stripped of its asbestos. I also occasionally used talc. How could anyone differentiate between the various exposures to prove which one caused it, if I were to fall ill?

BMW6 · 16/10/2025 22:44

I'm nearly 70 and talc was used by countless millions every day! Babies used to pretty much all smell of J&J talc!

Dont fret too much - my 5 siblings and I were smothered in it from birth and we're all hale and getting well into our later years.

BMW6 · 16/10/2025 22:46

Oh and my Dad used to shovel asbestos into piles in his early employment (1946+) and made it to 76.

Kudosss · 16/10/2025 22:52

I might be wrong but I understood it's a case of some batches of it in the 1970s could be contaminated with asbestos rather than all? Is it to do with them mining materials or something?

I’m thinking the same as I read this article. I never used it on my kids as this risk was known as long as 20 years ago!

Puppamumma · 16/10/2025 23:00

My mum coated both me and my siblings in talc as babies . We have both tested positive for a faulty brac2 gene so it's more likely that will cause cancer than our mum trying to keep her babies dry and comfortable

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 16/10/2025 23:01

I heard about this years ago, think my dad used to talk about it in the 90s

I found this
link which might be bollocks but says that Johnson and Johnson knew in the 60s that talc was likely to contain asbestos.

I don't think this is very new news iyswim

Helpmechooseausername · 16/10/2025 23:03

I always thought the problem with talc was the traffic itself. I think the asbestos thing is another, different problem.

I remember my mum puffing it all over herself after a bath or wash, including loads in between her legs. I remember telling her that they thought talc could be carcinogenic, and that was way back in the 90s. She went on to develop cervical and womb cancer ...

HoskinsChoice · 16/10/2025 23:36

OP, there's no proven link. There are people who used talc that got cancer but there's zero evidence that there is definitively a link it could very well be a coincidence. People get cancer for many reasons. Forget about it. Concentrate on your life and your child rather than worrying about something that will almost certainly not happen.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/10/2025 23:39

They have categorically said it doesn't contain asbestos though

Littlenest88 · 16/10/2025 23:40

Yes I thought that they stopped using it in their talcum powder years ago

cherish123 · 16/10/2025 23:41

It's awful. I remember when I was a child in the early 80s, my parents wouldn't let me use talcum powder because it was carcinogenic.

Are you assuming this mother knew her children would have genes raising their cancer risk? That's not what the poster said at all.

Littlenest88 · 16/10/2025 23:53

Maybe but a BRCA2 gene isn’t exactly comfortable.

I was also aware of this in the 90’s and so never used it on my babies. I’m sure I was told by a health professional.

ChocolateBoxCottage · 17/10/2025 00:01

The brac2 gene was discovered until 1995. Plus you need genetic test. Babies aren't born with their genome printout

Mangledrake · 17/10/2025 00:06

No indeed - very hard on parents and on children who inherit it, but no reflection on parenting skills or on their love for their children.

ninjahamster · 17/10/2025 00:10

We were smothered in it as kids (I’m 50). My parents used it liberally. They are mid 80s now, no issues so far! My husband also remembers his parents using it on him and his siblings, all 8 of them. Again no issues so far.
It’s a higher risk, not a given, my husband worked with asbestos when younger, nobody knew the risks then. So far he is ok.

Yes you’re right I think I am biased as my own mother was very irresponsible and selfish
