In a mess with hr admin role job offer

Hi there,

Ive been working for the council 6 years on a 80% hybrid basis. Its reasonably flexible and the working at home means im still here when the children return from school. And during holidays. They are 9 and 11.

I have been studying for a level 3 in People Practice in the aim to get into HR.
Ive been offered a very local HR admin role. Unfortunately it is not hybrid (didnt realise at interview)& solely office based and I would struggle with this compared to the flexibility that my current role with the council offers.

I have found this decision very hard. What if I dont get ever get another opportunity?

I am still studying for this qualification but at 40 I feel its now or never and its a hard pill to swallow.

Any advice? Anyone work in hr entry role that is hybrid?

Thanks

Do you really want to work for a company that has misled you? (I'm assuming you didn't potentially waste everyone's time by getting all the way to offer stage without asking about hybrid working). If they've suggested it's hybrid but then said it isn't at offer stage, I'd be questioning their ethics.

I’m not in HR but I wouldn’t leave a permanent role in a local authority. Complete your qualification and look out for a HR role in your council or other local councils around you.
The benefits of a local authority is incomparable from what I know.
Good luck with your decision 😊

Your 40 days of annual leave and sick pay (you never know when you will need it) in the local authority won’t compare with the private sector role. Stick with the LA.

Overtheatlantic · 16/10/2025 12:29

I agree with the others and I work in HR. I also wouldn’t be expecting a hybrid role as an early career person. An important part of HR is interacting with people and answering queries from drop-ins.

Do not leave your current job

coxesorangepippin · 16/10/2025 12:49

40 days of annual leave?!?!!

CoffeeCup14 · 16/10/2025 12:52

I recently left an LA role, annual leave was better than minimum but not massively. Definitely not 40 days. They do often increase leave with length of service

40 days of annual leave?!?!!

Would love to work for that Council 😂

I get 34 days but that includes time off over Xmas and other public holidays etc. No bank holiday freebies for me.

(I would stick to looking for LA jobs of you can).

Flowergirl1981 · 16/10/2025 15:00

I wish it were 40 days.

Mine is 27 days and bank holidays on top which I guess is pretty standard

I’d say no to this role. There will be other opportunities out there. Our HR team are fully remote as are many sectors now.
Don’t leave the local authority perks for anything less than exactly the role you want.

FinallyHere · 16/10/2025 17:52

Don’t underestimate the impact how you are perceived when you join an organisation. I’d really not rush to move until you are qualified.. and even then wait to find the perfect role.

it’s really difficult to be recognise as moving up once you are part of the staff. Much easier when they are trying to recruit you. Good luck.

Deeprug · 16/10/2025 17:59

Holidays will be really hard to cover. Your dc are still young.

TheDandyLion · 16/10/2025 18:24

There will be other HR opportunities that are better than this one. Stay where you are and keep looking.

Anonandonandonandon · 16/10/2025 18:28

I’m senior HR and have HR admins in my team. They work mostly remotely, but we require that childcare arrangements are in place for children who wouldn’t be left at home on their own if the parent wasn’t wfh. Both afterschool and in the holidays.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 16/10/2025 18:39

I would add to the posters in favour of remaining in your LA role, to consider your future pension provision. Local authorities normally have good pension schemes and whilst it may seem a long way away at present, all too soon this will be important to you (obviously the other organisation may have an equal or better one but it’s something to bear in mind).

I would be astounded if a pension scheme in the private sector comes anywhere even close to a local gov one. Public sector pensions are absolutely outstanding.

I'm not sure how great the awareness of this is. I also don't think there's enough understanding of how important pensions are. There's so many people on here that think the government should remove the triple lock with seemingly no thought that this will screw us all over when we reach retirement age.

Flowergirl1981 · 19/10/2025 12:47

Thanks all.

Im going to remain at the council and look out for other HR opportunities.

Hopefully im not turning down a fantastic opportunity, if it was hybrid if wouldn't be such a hard decision
