To ask for your best subscription box ideas for 6 year old?

Relatives have been asking for present ideas for DS who has a birthday (turning 6) near Christmas and have suggested maybe getting him a subscription box so he has something to spread the excitement out over the whole year.

This is a great idea as he gets quite a lot of stuff in one go with having a birthday close to Christmas but I'm at a loss of which subscriptions would be good for him and thought some real life recommendations would be helpful.

He loves science, space, building Lego models and cooking but can get frustrated when something needs adult help as he likes to be independent. He can read well and likes magazines but I think he'd prefer something that was mix between making and reading.

So if you're child has a subscription box or magazine and enjoys it please feel free to recommend. ☺️

I’ve not had one for a 6yr old, but I have seen ones for younger children where you send back the box each month and get a new one. Really cuts down on waste, storing toys, having to get rid of them when they grow out of them, etc.!

We had subscriptions to the following, possibly slightly old for a 6yo:

The Beano. A classic for a reason.
Whizz Pop Bang. Monthly science magazine, lots of things to do in it.
The Week Junior. Weekly newspaper.

I'm not sure a toy subscription box is what they had in mind, more like a comic or craft box thing where you get something new each month. Lord knows he doesn't need any more toys.😂

Thanks for the suggestions JaninaDuszejko unfortunately yes I think they would be a bit old for him but he will definitely be getting the beano when he's older as you say it's a classic for a reason. 🙂

My daughter had Whizz pop bang and the week junior at that age. They were pretty good for young kids particularly the science one.

DS is 6 (Y2) and has subscriptions to both The Week Junior and Aquila.

We had Toucan boxes for a few years, they're nearly all craft and a smattering of science, they come with a kit and instructions, it's not *all pink and girly (tomboy mum) but there are flowers and feathers occasionally...
Have a look online and see if he'd like that.

My DD now gets Aquila and really enjoys it.

Mud & bloom are great - gardening & crafts

letterbox lab - made by the same people as whizz pop bang mag but you get all the kit, pricey but brilliant

Membership of StormForce - the junior section of the RNLI. It’s a cross between blue peter - with kids submitting art and pictures of models and cakes, water safety - with things to keep you safe in and around water, science and engineering with info on the boats and tech, and natural world eg how to tell speed of wind by looking at sea state.

its a total bargain and they get a gorgeous goodie bag with pencil case etc when they join. Lovely community. only £18 per year.

it’s also brilliant because they learn to recognise RNLI - do if ever get lost etc at beach, they know just who to go to.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I looked at the toucan box and it's good but something less focused on crafts would probably sustain his interest for longer.

Letterbox lab looks amazing but yes very pricey and Aquila magazine unfortunately would probably be too old for him at present, although definitely one to consider when he's older.

I have however discovered today that apparently his school has issues of the weekly in the library so will encourage him to read them and see if it's something that sparks his interest.

I'm really appreciating all the ideas though it's helpful to have some other options to look into.

I’m not sure of your budget but my kids are desperate for a crunch lab subscription but it’s pricey as it’s shipped from the USA.
