How do you look after yourself? Self care and grooming

Consideringparttime · 15/10/2025 20:07

I've let myself go. I wake up very early for work and wear practical clothing. Minimal and dated make up.
I walk and lot and eat well and drink enough water, sleep well.
What day to.day self care helped you feel better about yourself?
I'm.looking for small changes I can make tomorrow. I won't do stuff like get my colours done, have a make up appt etc
A friend suggested a bit of fake tan, another said to make sure I'm taking the right supplements.
What can I literally start tomorrow that will make me feel that I look after myself well ?
Grateful for any advice
(Ps I do own things like skin care etc I just fall into ruts of not using it)

I think you do a lot to look after your self already, (drinking plenty of water, eating and sleeping well and walking daily). These things will all impact how you look. I don't do these things nearly enough so you are ahead of me there! I do apply make up every day but you don't seem interested in that? Getting your nails done might be an idea as you can see them more during the day then your face! Also wearing some body lotion or perfume with a lovely smell could be positive.

Hankunamatata · 15/10/2025 20:16

I kept it simple

Taking menopause supplements and collagen.

Moisture every morning and night - olay regen day and night creams

Invested in good make up for older skin - I like trinny london and went for more simple make up look that I can do quickly and easily everymorning

Get my eyebrows threaded and dyed

Keeping up with hair dye for those grey hairs

Biggest impact was buying 3/4 dresses for work that I felt stylish and comfortable (chub rub shorts underneath) and some nice chunky dressy necklaces. Still wear trainers though

Consideringparttime · 15/10/2025 20:16

Body lotion is very good idea! I'm.a nail biter so.i could grow them again and this could also be nice.i just find I feel grubby and scruffy a lot at the moment

Oh I forgot about nails

Discovered nail wraps from lily and fox in Australia. Cheap as chips, easy to apply and look fab

searchforthesun · 15/10/2025 20:18

Good hair cut/colour and a few drops of fake tan in your moisturiser

Hankunamatata · 15/10/2025 20:18

Laser on legs and underarms and bikini was game changer too as im lazy with shaving and waxing

Hayley1256 · 15/10/2025 20:20

I really enjoy my morning and night skincare routine, it only takes 5 mins but makes feels like a treat.

Regular things I do include having my hair and nails done, laser hair removal, facial every few months.

Use lots of moisturiser tonight and again in the morning. Then cover your dark circles and any blemishes with concealer. Curl your lashes and two coats of mascara up top. Fill in your brows lightly if they're thin. Add a tinted lip gloss and a teeny bit of blush.
Wear a top that matches your eye colour if your eyes are blue or green. Alternatively if it suits you, a red or pink top.
Wear nice earrings if work appropriate.
If your hair suits you wavy/curly sleep in pin curls or the dressing gown cord method.
Longer term, make sure your practical clothes are also nice, colours that suit you and in current styles.
Try and make your hair look good every day. Use dry shampoo, volumising spray or shine spray or all three. Experiment with the quick fixes they offer to find one that suits.
Be religious about your skin care.
Use hand cream and have neat nails. Paint in a neutral cour.
Use a nice bag.

OhFeyreDarling · 15/10/2025 20:22

One of the best things I did was a proper skin care routine, cleanse, serum, moisturise. My skin is so sensitive though and flares up at anything since I hit late 30s. It's a relaxing routine before bed

Sounds like you're doing well otherwise

Borethefuckoff · 15/10/2025 20:26

Nothing fancy.
Wash my hair every other day and always feel better when it’s down and straightened rather than a mum bun which happens often! Makeup but not mascara as end up with panda eyes. Foundation, bronzer and blusher and clear eye brow stuff. Always wear quite a dark bold lipstick as it makes me feel good! Also earrings. Try and dress semi smart … skirt with tights and a black top with flat boots. Sometimes wear trainers but never feel quite as nice!

Always perfume or scented body lotion.

Pyjamatimenow · 15/10/2025 20:28

I have my hair coloured regularly, nails painted, use teeth whitening strips every few months, makeup every day and style my hair, moisturiser and tanner on my face every night and light self tan on body once or twice a week

something2say · 15/10/2025 20:29

Get onto Amazon and buy Elizabeth Arden 8hr magic oil - this is a spray on oil that you can use after a shower - it will soak in beautifully, is light and smells nice - perfect to spritz all down your arms and over your décolletage, rub in and will make your skin look dewy and loved.

Also get a cheapo salt scrub in oil from Home Bargains - handfuls of salt rubbed all over your body not only stimulates blood flow to the skin, but removes all dead skin cells and reveals nice soft skin, and the oil stays on and you don't need to moisturise afterwards. Nothing like a good salt scrub - and this is all in a simple shower.

Have fun!

Oh one more thing - a touch of blusher goes a long way to making a face look pretty and healthy.

Hoolihan · 15/10/2025 20:31

Tretinoin every night
Face oil couple of times a week (Sali Hughes Face Blanket is lovely)
A nice leave in conditioner or Olaplex No 3 hair treatment
Body moisturiser as often as I can be bothered
Nuxe body oil & perfume
A sheer/dewy lip & cheek colour stick e.g. Milk Makeup, Nudestix, Ilia, Nars
A tidy bedroom, lovely scented candle, clean bedlinen, a good book!

FindingMeno · 15/10/2025 20:43

I do go to the hairdressers for cuts and highlights and get biab nails every so often.
I don't really bother with fancy skincare, facials or make up though ad I have good skin and prefer the natural look.
Where I look after myself and feel ( and sometimes look) better for it is taking care of my health needs. I always go to any screening offered, and go to the dentist and hygienist every 6 months. I also go to regular counselling and to a massage therapist. I walk a lot and see a chiropodist as and when needed.
I feel better for doing it, and it's an exercise in realising my self worth to give myself permission to indulge in my health.

Alittlefrustrated · 15/10/2025 21:00

body oil after my shower
generous facial moisturiser morning and night
gentle cleansing
makeup every day - not mascara
floss/interdental brushes
daily exercise
collagen supplement
probiotics
body spray or perfume daily
jewellery every day
hand cream - not interested in nails,so keep them neat and short.

ThatGreenFawn · 15/10/2025 21:06

I started drinking Rheal clean greens and beauty berry. Tastes like mud if drank mixed with water, but mixed with orange juice and having both together makes it much more palatable (after drinking it now for 3 months I actually quite enjoy it now.)
Since starting drinking it, my skin is so much better, clearer and looking really healthy. So much more energy, strong nails.
I really noticed when I didn't drink them forward week while on holiday.

Itsallsostressful · 15/10/2025 21:06

I would say
Good basic skincare cleanse serum moisturise
I've started getting biab nails only need done every 3 weeks but help to look polished.
Brows tinted and waxed.
Lash lift and tint.
Nice perfume every day 😊

AutumnChild99 · 15/10/2025 21:10

Eat fresh fruit and veg every day for your skin and little/no alcohol, keep hydrated. Skincare doesn't need to be complicated - moisturiser and daily sunscreen as a minimum, add tretinoin at night for best results. Wash hair as often as possible.

Iron your clothes - I would recommend natural fabrics like cotton, wool, cashmere, linen and spend a bit more for good quality, classic styles.
If you have any gold or silver jewellery, wear it daily.
Regular exercise including strength training - especially if you are aged 40+.
As others mentioned, make a dentist appointment if you are due, hygienist every 6 months and attend all your screenings (and winter jabs).

Pilates. Will make a massive difference to how you look and feel. Find a proper core Pilates lesson not a “fit” lesson.

Pinkmoonshine · 15/10/2025 21:16

Exercise and diet are the things that matter far far far the most. Improve them in any way you can.

anamo · 15/10/2025 21:23

You do a lot of what would generally be advised anyway, so that's a great start.

I found when I got stale and hated ME, that a cut and colour pampering session did wonders. I only do that once or twice a year as my niece trims it in the meantime and I use box dyes in between.

Ditch any clothes that don't fit and are looking out of date, stale, and not at their best. Vinted for the good ones, bin or charity for the rest. Buy some nice fresh items when you can afford them.

Good footwear. That doesn't mean Louboutin heels, but good supportive trainers, a pair of leather ankle boots (Christmas gift maybe?) and something nice to wear for special occasions.

A swift brush up around your face with BB/CC cream and a bit of blush will brighten up your face. I swear by eye drops to brighten the eyes, but only if they look dull. It's amazing what that does.

All simple, easy steps. Some free, some more expensive, but cut your cloth and do it bit by bit.

WildLimePoet · 15/10/2025 21:26

Good hair, teeth and eyebrows. These are the two things that make someone look most put together.

Everything else just needs to be tidy and clean. But good hair, teeth and eyebrows require investment of time, energy and money.

NoOneToCallWhenThePlaneLands · 15/10/2025 21:28

I wash my hair a minimum of twice a week. Keep it oiled and clean with dry shampoo.

i am religious about my skincare routine. Morning and night, using retinol every other day. I’m careful about my supplements and make sure they’re tailored to what I need. I spend fifteen minutes in the morning to do a full face of makeup and make sure I regularly go through my wardrobe, list items that don’t fit/look drab on vinted and buy new items as and when I need. I make sure my shoes are in keeping with my outfit and the coat I am wearing isn’t too big.

I don’t bother with fake tan in the winter because I’m covered from head to toe. But I shave and keep up with moisturiser

notacooldad · 15/10/2025 21:33

Pilates. Will make a massive difference to how you look and feel. Find a proper core Pilates lesson not a “fit” lesson.

I do reformer pilates at least twice a week and its great. I mix my classes up so sometimes it might be more more gentle stretching other times its hardcore!

Other ways I look after myself include
Being mindful about food - well I've failed a bit in the last month but for the last 18 months but all the meals I make are non upf. Cutting down on sugar is still work in progress though.

Ive had my haircut cut to shoulder length and im astonished at the difference in how I look ( in a good way)

I had lip blush done two years ago and it still looks bloody good! I also had eyeliner tattoo and it is amazing the difference it makes.

I drink water, usually 2 litres throughout the day.

My eyebrows are threaded and tinted an I have a few false lashes on the outer corners of my eye.

I use a LED face mask.

I take Collegen and Magnesium.

I gave up drinking at home about 10 years ago and even when im out ill have a no or low alcohol drink.

Ive had invisalign done and teeth whitening. Its not over the top white like Rylan, just fresher.

I have a full 'luxury' pedicure, so that is hard skin removal, nails cut and shaped, gel nails etc every 6 weeks.

Ive had botox for my vertical forehead lines. No regrets on thst don't look like im about to kick off at someone when im not! 😆
Thats about it, i do try and walk 5 miles a day and get that first thing in the morning with the beastie boys ( my three dogs)

AmIBeingWeird · 15/10/2025 21:36

Exercise.

I lift heavy weights 3x week, plus do some cardio

In my personal opinion the most significant single factor that affects whether I look good or not is my weight and how fit/muscular I am.

Other things like clothes / hair help but for me being fit & slim is the key
