One year old sleeping on his cot covers

I put him to bed and cover him up but he wriggles around and every night without fail he ends up asleep starfished on his covers and I can’t cover him back up without waking him up by getting the cover from under him, then he will wake in the night because he’s done it again and is cold.
Do I just wait until he grows out of this or is there another way?

Sleeping bag or spare blanket to cover him with rather than pulling the one out from under him to use?

Bitzee · 15/10/2025 11:17

Whilst I know they can safely have a duvet/loose covers from 1 it’s very young to actually stay under them and if he’s waking cold then just put him back in a sleeping bag. Revisit the duvet next spring/summer because a) he’ll be older so more likely to stay under it and b) it’ll be warmer so less likely to wake cold if he doesn’t.

Sleeping bag.

Edited to add: there's also a Parenting board here on Mumsnet!

WhereIsMyLight · 15/10/2025 11:19

Sleeping bag until he tries to climb out of the cot in it, then switch to a blanket or duvet. He’s too young to pull his blankets back over him. Spare blankets to put over him. Consider getting mg a thermostatic value for his radiator and keeping his room at a set temperature.

We did use a sleeping bag last winter but I didn’t feel it was enough on his top half so I thought a duvet would be cosy for winter.
I have blankets but I wouldn’t be very warm under a blanket.
I could buy sleeping bags again because even if it’s not as warm a duvets not warm if you don’t have it over you anymore.

You can buy sleeping bags that are different togs including up to 3.5 which is really warm, not even necessary for this country. Plus you can buy bags with sleeves if you think it's not warm enough on top. Just look around.

bumbeebee · 15/10/2025 11:25

He does stand up in his cot when he wakes up, that’s why we thought against sleeping bags

Thank you, we’ll have to see what else there’s is then

Sleeping bag.

And if you think his arms are cold, a warmer sleepsuit.

He's too young for a duvet really.

Eleph42 · 15/10/2025 11:28

Sleeping bags are all I’ve used and my child just turned 2 in summer. I have 1.5 and 2.5 tog and rotate depending on weather. You can get them with built in arms too if wanted, I think from next. I know white company ones go until 36 months. My child has always slept through the night (I know this will be a mix of things) but do believe sleeping bag has really helped. The only time I don’t use is in the height of summer. Right now I put long pjs on with sleeping bag over and I find she can stand up in them now as she’s used to them 🤣 x

Bedtelly · 15/10/2025 11:34

We used sleeping bags until ours were 3 to be honest. Just easier.

They can still stand up in a sleeping bag! Get a 3.5 tog sleeping bag if it's cold. And it's technically twice the tog as it goes all the way round, rather than a duvet which is only on top. We've only ever used sleeping bags, I was too nervous to use loose covers in the first year.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 15/10/2025 11:38

You can get very thick sleeping bags with both arms and legs, if you're worried about him being cold/falling over.

bumbeebee · 15/10/2025 11:40

Thank you, maybe I was a bit hesitant getting a duvet for winter. (you learn) it will keep and I can save it for next year. Thank you @Mew2they seem a lot better than his zip round one.

Non issue. Babies usually pull to stand before 12 months old and a duvet isn’t safe at that age so you stick with the sleeping bag. It’s a problem if he climbs but then so is the whole cot and if that happens you convert it to a toddler bed but you still have option of the toddler sleeping bags.

As for warmth you can get 3.5 tog ones with sleeves (JoJo used to do nice ones when mine were babies) but doubtful you need that in a typical temperature home. Get a gro egg so you know the temperature of the room then refer to the sleeping bag charts.

Hasty not hesitant

My toddler has never tolerated a sleeping bag or a duvet, just sleeps on top of his sheets, nothing covering him. Can't see the issue to be honest. If your child is waking cold, put thicker sleepsuit/pj's on them and some socks?

Flibbertyfloo · 15/10/2025 11:51

Get a sleeping bag with feet like the Slumbersac ones. Oddly they don't seem to mind their feet being uncovered. They can stand up and even walk around in them. They're very handy.

Pinkyhere · 15/10/2025 12:05

I used to dress mine in onesie, cotton baby grow, then put a warmer fleece baby grow over the top if it was really cold I put a sweatshirt over the top.
He had blankets and a sleeping bag but he managed to escape all of them

ZanyFawn · 15/10/2025 12:22

My kiddo was like this, even now she won’t stay under the covers. I go in and re-cover her and she immediately boots the duvet back off as soon as she senses it coming over her. She insists on sleeping with a fan on (which I do manage to get away with switching off once she’s asleep), strips her pyjamas off and she’s like this all year round. I can’t cope with it, I sleep under a duvet and thick throw and will be getting the electric one out too shortly 🥶

Hibbs126 · 15/10/2025 13:22

Sainsburys do some padded sleepsuits which are 1.5 or 2.5tog. I found these really good last winter and wish they went up in size past 2 years.
