I’ve messed up with the holiday I’ve booked

I had a week of annual leave to use before April. I did some research and booked a week to be split between Oslo and Copenhagen at the end of February/beginning of March. Everything I had found said that temperatures at this time were around -5° to 2°C. I figured I could cope with that.

I’ve now found a lot of discussion online that says that last year it was regularly -30° in Oslo in February. It’s a bit luck of the draw but apparently it can stay below freezing until the end of March.

What do I do? I’ve paid for everything and it’s non refundable but if it’s that cold I’ll literally just be sat in a hotel room all day. Do I go and hope for the best or just cancel and use my leave another way?

I've only been to oslo once en route to somewhere else in Norway, but have visited Copenhagen all year round as one of my best friends lives there and it is an amazing city. Yes it might be a bit chilly but there is so much to do there and with plenty of layers you'll be fine, and I'd say it won't be any worse than the UK around then. The Metro is very good, which helps, there are plenty of museums, there's a tropical section of the botanical gardens and an incredible indoor food hall/ market, and lots of good bars, which are all good things to do on a cold day. There is also a huge Irish community in Copenhagen, so a lot of traditional pubs. Also, Copenhagen is full of really good (and very reasonably priced) spas and saunas and pools so that is a very good way to warm up!

Next time do your research more thoroughly plenty of warmer places you could have gone, but you chose cold ones!

I have a friend who lives in Oslo. Yes, it’s a bit dark and cold at that time of year but there are a lot of cultural things going on there. Concerts, exhibitions. The Norwegian National Ballet company will be performing while you are there. Similarly in Copenhagen, lots to see and do. Just make sure you wrap up warm and enjoy the cosy bars and cafes too.

lots of thermals, cashmere for warmth if you have any, a massive down parka like the North Face arctic parka (can you borrow one?). You’ll have a great time, set off with the idea you’re going to enjoy it and you will

Lindalinda123 · 19/10/2025 14:07

Take thermals. Go and enjoy yourself.

I've been to Oslo in February and it was lovely about - 3 day -7 night nothing to be panicking about.

I couldn’t afford an all inclusive etc. by not much choice I meant the timing. I did research and based on that I booked it but then it turns out that research was wrong!

You do seem to be panicking over nothing...I'd bet my last pound it wont be -30 its usually about -3 to +5 just wear what you would if you were in uk winter but with a pair of thermals or even tights under trousers, hat gloves warm footwear good to go. Your not going to the north pole.

i can’t afford to spend silly money on a coat that I then have to sell on at a loss.

Then dont.

twilightermummy · 19/10/2025 14:34

I think you'll have a great time! What an adventure! If you hate it, I'm sure you'll come back with some funny stories. Take a good book. I'm actually jealous, I'd love to be doing something like this if I didn't have the kids.

im looking around for a coat but obviously don’t want something I can’t use again in the UK!

Just your normal.winter coat is fine but bring thermal underwear, tops and bottoms . Then layer up and make sure you have a warm fleece to go under the coat . Warm.socks and boots and hat and gloves and scarf. It will.be fine
