Stay at council hybrid or start new role?

Hi

Ive been working for local council for past 5 years part time. Job mundane but team lovely and of course has its benefits being local government.

Ive been asking for more hours for months but no scope.

Ive been doing a course in new field and been offered job in private sector in new field. Slightly more money- £4k per year - fully office based, no option for hybrid.

Current company now in position to offer full time hours.

Do I stay where I am in local government, pretty cushy job, nice team and look to move internally into new field.

Or do I take this new role in private sector? It has more career progression.
Sick pay is only 5 days a year and pension not quite as good.

Thoughts please?

If it was me, I would stay at the council and wait for an opportunity there.

Hybrid working is a huge benefit to work life balance.

Do you have dc? I find hybrid is so valuable in allowing me to work full time but still being home for dc after school (mine are 14-17 so not needy but they come in and if they’ve had a bad day might have a hug before finding snacks). I wouldn’t change that for £4k. But if you have no dc and other opportunity provides scope for development and to progress then it’s worth considering.

What is your commute like for the new role?

I'd keep waiting for an opportunity at the council to come up. The flexibility with dc makes it possible to work longer hours. When they're secondary age you can wfh and be in the house after school and through the holidays. If you're ill you get a tremendous amount of support. You get masses of holiday after five years. The pension is good.

I would stay.

I’ve recently moved (same organisation) and like you I worked in a lovely team.
I have subsequently moved into a post with a team who have made it very obvious they don’t want me there and where the culture is toxic. I have regretted the move every single day.

I completely underestimated how much of a difference it makes to have a great team around you because when every day is a battle or generally tough having someone who will share a joke, or offer to chat about something makes such a difference.
