Just that really. Live in an old victorian house. Not well insulated and draughts in a lot of places. Thing is I just really prefer cold rooms - I can layer up if I'm cold but I can't take any more clothes off if heating is too hot. Our family have adapted over time and now we only ever put the heating on at night or early morning in the dead of winter and if the temperature drops below say 14 or so. Do you know anyone the same ?
I hate hot stuffy rooms ' our office is constantly too warm... I appreciate I'm peri menopausal so run hotter than most. If I'm really cold to the bone for whatever reason which doesn't happen often I will have a hot bath instead as heating wouldn't solve that anyway for me. My MIL house is constantly overheated (for me). They walk around in the dead of winter with tank tops etc. And turn the heating on because they are cold....Why not just wear a jumper ! Anyway - tell me if you think it's strange, normal or anything in-between. I don't do it for the cost - luckily

I'm the same! Having the heating on dries my skin out and I hate being too hot too. My mum used to open all the windows every morning no matter the weather so I think I got used to it as a kid.

RandomGeocache · 14/10/2025 19:34

I wouldn’t be happy in that temperature. 14c is very cold.

Ihateboris · 14/10/2025 19:35

I'm exactly the same. I prefer to lie under throws than put the heating on
..cuddling up to my dogs also keeps me nice and toasty.

Overtheatlantic · 14/10/2025 19:37

I couldn’t live without the heating on. I find it so uncomfortable to be cold and putting on extra clothes doesn’t help. Warmth makes me feel cosy and relaxed. My cat also likes a warm house.

EchoedSilence · 14/10/2025 19:39

I'd hate to live in a cold damp house just so I could tell people on the internet how hardy I am.

TomatoSandwiches · 14/10/2025 19:39

I prefer my bedroom cold, I like a mild 18-20°C elsewhere.

Houseoftrouser25 · 14/10/2025 19:40

14 c is very unhealthy plus your house wiill get damp

I have awful Reynauds and feel the cold terribly

Ohchocolatyalmonds · 14/10/2025 19:42

House isn't damp at all - and it reaches above 18 during daytime from sun streaming into windows and ventilation. You can feel dampness in cold air and of course then you would put the heating on 😂

You have to remember that your house needs a decent combination of heat and ventilation to avoid damp.

You also don't want your pipes to freeze and end up with damage/expensive repairs...

18 is a lovely temperature for me too. Research shows bedrooms should be colder for a good night's sleep yes

Once I’m cold, I’m cold - doesn’t matter how many layers I subsequently put on (and I do run warm). Heating on as soon as I’m cold, always

I do love a cooler bedroom though - always searching for the cold side of the pillow!

Thissickbeat · 14/10/2025 19:45

Yabu. It'll get damp. 14° isn't a healthy house temperature.
Even 18° is miserable. I'm menopausal, layered up and house is 22°. I hate chilly air.

Ohchocolatyalmonds · 14/10/2025 19:46

Just to clarify - anything below 15 is when the heating automatically kicks into action. But the house doesn't get that cold that often unless dead of winter weeks. They recommend not going below 15 degrees for health of building etc. But incidentally that's also comfortable for me most of the time- whilst I'm aware a lot of people are cold below 21 !

Same here, Windows still open all night and the back door still open all day. Heating only on when there's an inch of ice on the roof. I'm a true northerner

So what's your question ?

Irenesortof · 14/10/2025 19:49

I prefer cooler rooms and I'm happy if the house as a whole is around 15; I'm OK with it a bit lower unless I'm sitting still inside when I prefer 17. It's mostly what you're used to. But our house gets damp and bone-chilly in very wet weather so we have the heating on more at those times.

Yes that makes sense - if wet we probably put it on more / kicks on quicker as it doesn't heat up again. Or if I'm line drying clothes....not often though ! The oven and dryer helps out too to keep it warmer
