To think cat ownership should be considered more anti-social than it is

I am a single working parent. I live in a terraced house in a middle of the city. Each house on my street and the parallel one has a small yard. I have spent time and money to make my yard as attractive as it can be, putting in borders with a small number of plants, and some pots.

Neighbours on all sides have cats - some have more than one cat each. The problem is for me that cats are taking over my yard.

On a daily basis the cats dig up my planters, putting mud on the floor and pulling out plants. They do this because my border is the hippest place to shit. So now I have a border that on one side is kitchen herbs and the other side mud and cat shit. RANK.

I have to check before I can let my kids play out there because they also like shitting right by my door.

This morning I was greeted with a mass of pigeon feathers that I had to clear up where some unlucky bird saw its fate.

They knock over my pots, causing more mess.

In the summer I can't have my back door open because the cats will walk into my house. I was once in my bed and a cat came in my bedroom. They would come in every time the door was open if I left it. When I wfh with the door open I sit with a small water pistol so I can aim it at the door.

I have very little spare time of money and am furious I have to spend both of them now finding out how I can make my yard seem less desirable to cats, then putting this plan into action.

One of my cat-owning neighbours plays loud music and smokes weed in his yard but his two cats are more annoying than both those behaviours.

I have just seen one of the bastards digging out my borders again and am furious.

AIBU: yes, now you've put it so calmly and succinctly, cats have got a great PR team and people should consider that if they get a cat their neighbours have to put up with their shitty actions which could be mitigated by a nice packet of biscuits at christmas

NOT BU: get over it

Hard agree.

If you get a cat it shouldn't be able to leave your property.

Thecrunchbunch · 14/10/2025 14:42

You should get a cat. then the other cats wont come in to your garden

Have you ever met a cat?

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/10/2025 14:42

I used to think that. neighbours with shitting, dreadful cat and loud children.

Now I have a barky dog and they are so great about it. I'm glad I was nice through gritted teeth. And their kids are utterly lovely.

ThatLemonBear · 14/10/2025 14:42

I have 2 cats who can't roam beyond my back garden, so hopefully I've escaped your wrath (don't assume we're all irresponsible like your neighbours)

Poppingby · 14/10/2025 14:43

As a cat owner I was feeling quite sheepish and sympathetic reading your post until I got to the the weed-smoking cats. Maybe they are rastafarian? So judgy.

JudgeBread · 14/10/2025 14:44

Lol we have one who comes into the house and makes herself comfy on the sofa. No idea who owns her, but since it started we don't get cats shitting in the garden anymore so we think she must be some sort of cat royalty and has proclaimed our house her domain.

Get some sprinklers or something. Cat owners will never ever hear of their precious fur babies being contained.

Keeping cats indoors is cruel. Most cats need to be able to go out and roam. It’s part of their nature.

Yes because selfishly people let the wander wherever they please.

NotAnotherPylon · 14/10/2025 14:47

Just waiting for the usual comments about fox shit …

yeriknow · 14/10/2025 14:47

I don’t have a cat but I love seeing them do all this.

I love their attitude, find them hilarious.

Shitting in the garden I can’t get wound up about - birds, foxes and all sorts are shitting in my garden. I just deal with it.

They are effectively wild animals which some people allow access to their houses, and some of them are better behaved than others, as you’ve seen.

If I were you I’d try not to let them bother you, because you can’t do much about them and it’ll just frustrate you.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 14/10/2025 14:48

I love cats and enjoy it if they wander into the house. But I have a small, barky and very aggressive (to cats) dog and I have to say that it's the total solution to cats in the garden or coming into the house. I still have a cat flap from the last cats I had, but even next door's cats don't hang around in my garden when there's a demon terrier who might, at any point, come bursting out and chase them over the fence.

You could borrow a terrier, OP. That would put the wind up them. Using larger stones as a top dressing will often stop cats shitting in your pots though. It will also stop them knocking the pots over.

RoseAndGeranium · 14/10/2025 14:49

We used to have bantam chickens. They were fine with the usual neighbourhood cats. Then two doors down got two massive Maine coon crosses that killed one of the chickens and harassed the others so badly we had to give them away. The owners weren’t remotely apologetic. In fact they were angry because I threw (soft) balls at their cats and shouted at them when they came into our garden.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/10/2025 14:50

I have 2 cats and I agree with you, I have changed my mind over years of reading Mumsnet posts and I wouldn’t get them now. There are too many cats in urban areas and it’s not fair on people who don’t want them in their gardens and also they kill too many birds. Fine if you live somewhere isolated but antisocial in towns.

Irenesortof · 14/10/2025 14:51

Try explaining to the owners what is happening and ask them to create cat friendly toilets on their own property. I love cats but the need territory and it doesn’t work to have them in crowded places.

airportfloor · 14/10/2025 14:51

Yes before people say about foxes, it's the sheer number of cats Vs foxes I am talking about. I see the odd fox.

I see scores of cats every day. It's like living in really budget, crap version of those fancy lion lodges.

BloodandGlitter · 14/10/2025 14:53

You're not allowed to complain about cats on here OP! Don't you know the majority of Australian and American cat owners are abusive scum for keeping their pets indoors, it's nothing to do with outdoor cat owners being too lazy to look after their animals so they would rather see them squashed on the road.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 14/10/2025 14:54

I love cats but rememeber the frustration with cat shit in last house.

We were only house with no pets down our street and one backing on to our gardnes - so prime property for cats to shit in - I spent a fortune when money was tight trying to discourage as toddler coun't seem to avoid the mess.

If you have an outdoor tap - get a water scarecrow. I'd suggest a fly screen for the back door as may discourage them coming in.

beanbaggirs · 14/10/2025 14:55

I see far more foxes in my bit of London than I do cats.

I meant of all his annoying actions I prefer the music and the weed over the cats.

Will see if I can edit my post. He's an elderly white guy. I am quite envious of his joie de vivre tbh.
