6yr old searching naked pictures on youtube

Hi,

Today my 6yr Ds was on his tablet and he immediately closed it when I entered the room. I knew straight away from the look on his face that the was hiding something.

I asked him what he was doing and he hugged me immediately. I said it’s okay let me see, he kept pulling his tablet out of my hands and I assured him everything would be okay aslong as he showed me.

He ran out of the room and I opened his tablet to see him typing “someone naked” and there was a lot of nudes on videos I was shocked and naive to think this content wasn’t on YouTube.

He has a parental lock on his tablet and only YouTube kids but he went on chrome and searched YouTube on there and he probably realized there is no censoring.

He was a covid baby and we moved from the uk straight after lockdown. He has been homeschooled for a while as we moved around and now we live in a country where there are strict restrictions online. He has recently started school but I don’t think it’s something he picked up from there, I’m just shocked as it’s very out of character.

i had a talk with him and he was just crying the entire time and was very ashamed. I reassured him but told him the dangers of going on that part of the internet.

I just can’t seem to forget it, is this a big deal or something kids go through? I have a neurodivergent 8yo Ds who happily watches peppa pig and nursery rhymes so this is very new to me.

The fact that your 8-year-old daughter could have inadvertently viewed such content on her brother's tablet, had her curiosity piqued, and could have learnt from him how to search for this kind of content on her own unmonitored tablet, should be quite concerning for you.

Revise your fluidity with app pinning/safe search/etc. and monitor if you give them mobile devices. Better still, read to them and encourage them to read - it is the single biggest driver for academic success and attainment.

8yo son , not daughter. My children are read to and thriving academically. Hence why he can google search at 6yo, I let my guard down I admit. Looking for sound advice, not judgement. But then again this is mumsnet lol

Ask him why as that’s not a usual thing for a 6 year old to google.

Also drum home that the internet is a public place, if you wouldn’t do it in front of your teacher, don’t do it online.

MidnightMeltdown · 13/10/2025 19:10

I’m surprised that a 6 year old would know to search for something like that on the internet, but I think the curiosity is normal. Maybe consider an age appropriate book on human bodies and differences between girls and boys. You can get books with illustrations of naked bodies and the differences between them, which are designed for kids.

Please take the iPad away from your six year old.

it really is our responsibility to protect our children’s mind. Please take that seriously

Newsenmum · 13/10/2025 19:18

These responses are so harsh. She had child settings on but even then there are ways around it like using browsere op clearly didn’t know about. I also find it unsettling and would try to calmly find out where this has come from. Agree with the body book.

Thank you for all your comments, some great advice taken on board. Very stupidly thought having a no screen time approach on weekdays as Ds1 has asd and I feel it contributed to his late talking and behaviors. So eliminated it completely and allow 2 hours on weekends. Even then it’s most likely less as we are out and about.

this week Ds2 6, did very well at school and treated him to a little more time on the tablet but he is always supervised and uses it in the living room. But I found him in my room alone and he searched it while I was in the shower. There is a no tablet in bedroom policy as well.

i guess I let my guard down as I didn’t think this is what happens at this age. he is very advanced for his age though and a wiz at technology like most kids nowadays.

i was concerned like another poster said if he’d been exposed to anything but he said no. I will have a talk with him tomorrow again and hopefully get to the bottom of it. I hope it was curiosity, and nothing more but I don’t know what damage has been done by what glimpses he saw.

no other things were searched and this is the first time as I thoroughly checked. For someone who asked about how nudity is viewed in the family, I breastfeed infront of him but other than that he doesn’t see nudity openly.

op was it naked
men or women coming up? Any sort of theme?

Newsenmum · 13/10/2025 19:22

Also I relate Completely as my oldest also has asd and a tablet from a young age.
ive also become naive to what a typical 6 yo mighr search but still seems very young to me. The “he’a too young for a computer” brigade are missing the point.

WhywasIborntoolate · 13/10/2025 19:23

Don’t blame your child for accessing it at all? If you can’t think of someone he knows; a friend at school will have told him about it or told him to do it, usually from something overheard by an older sibling

Plinkyplankplonk · 13/10/2025 19:24

My son aged 6 searched people kissing on YouTube and was absolutely mortified when I asked him to talk to me about it, he'd heard people talking about it at school, I really dont think with most kids its anything sinister at all, now he's 8 and its even more of a minefield

101trees · 13/10/2025 19:33

I think different kids feel differently about the idea of people naked, at 6 it's unlikely to be sexual.

My DS found the idea of nakedness and even cartoons kissing on the TV incredibly awkward at that age (and many years afterwards). He literally hid his head behind a cushion and screamed during any TV programme (mainly animations) where people kissed.

But for him to feel awkward about it, he must still have realised it was a bit deal in some way, if you see what I mean.

I think what I'm getting at is that, at age 6, there's obviously some sort of realisation that nakedness and kissing etc is a thing with some meaning attached to it. So I don't think it's unusual to have recognition or curiosity about it at that age.

I'd try not to make the being naked part too much of a big deal, have a wider conversation about hiding having been looking, and rules around Internet access are there to keep you safe etc.

If it were me, I'd worry there's a risk to accidentally associating shame or embarassment with nakedness. Kids often add their own weird twist to things due to lack of understanding.

Missing the point how?

BertieBotts · 13/10/2025 21:20

It's normal curiosity, don't worry. There is nothing wrong with him. Order him a book about the body which includes genitals - I like the one called "Let's Talk About Boys, Girls, Bodies and Babies" because it emphasises that boys and girls are the same in many ways and in some ways we are different.

cestlavielife · 13/10/2025 21:23

Use guided access to Lock the iPad so he can only access YouTube kids. Nothing else . Remove Internet search app.

OSTMusTisNT · 13/10/2025 21:28

I don't have young kids anymore so thankfully past this stage but there is so much dodgy stuff on YT. E.g full legs akimbo Hollywood waxing appeared for me after looking up a routine surgery video under the guise of beautician training 🙄.

Definitely best to always supervise them.

Not even that as horror videos can appear on it

HarbourClankCat · 13/10/2025 21:31

Normal curiosity. Lock your stuff down

She did allow it - not intentionally - but by not supervising properly and and not having the appropriate controls in place.

You can’t unintentionally allow someone. It also wasn’t pornographic material like you stated, he searched ‘naked people’. He could have been just curious about naked bodies - which is much more likely.
