What do you think of this house?

I am dying for a house in the country to do up. It has to be commutable to London and occasionally Oxford. I am really dreaming of a period house/cottage for dh and I. It would be mine and dh’s first home outside of London. And the place we would have our first baby.

Dh thinks it’s dark poky but I can really see making it into something special right out of a Neptune catalogue.

what do you think? I can admit in the past I have been drawn to some actually quite ugly cottages purely cause my heart takes over with the romance of it all.

Needs a LOT of work and money spending on it. Lovely house though.

PicaK · 13/10/2025 17:21

You can't walk out of it with a pram. And you can't get a car on the drive by the looks of it.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/10/2025 17:21

It’s lovely but Is it worth £700k, given that it needs a lot of updating. Don’t know about properties in that area though.

YourPeppyAmberTraybake · 13/10/2025 17:21

I can’t see the appeal.

beanbaggirs · 13/10/2025 17:22

Far to close to the road for me and needs a lot of work.

Curiossir · 13/10/2025 17:23

I like it. Aylesbury itself is a bit shit though

Handedin · 13/10/2025 17:23

Gosh that needs a lot of work!

That wouldn't put me off if I had the time and the money, but being right on what looks like a main road really would. It is very close to the road.

ELO10538 · 13/10/2025 17:29

Check if it's listed. If it is don't touch it. Listed properties can be hell on earth to do up.

Otherwise it's an OK period property but nothing remarkable and not in a location I would say was convenient for Oxford.

(As for your wish to make it look like something out of a Neptune catalogue, I make no comment.)

Mischance · 13/10/2025 17:32

Looks great. It just needs a bit of updating which can be done over time. It is fully functional as is.

Newmeagain · 13/10/2025 17:34

Lovely house but too close to a main road.

DancingFerret · 13/10/2025 17:34

Not for me; it's too close to the road, the ceilings are too low and it's in need of some serious refurbishment.

Jc2001 · 13/10/2025 17:35

Looks a bit of a fixer upper from the few photos that are shown.

I'm always a bit suspicious of listings that only show a couple of internal photos, especially on a property with so many rooms. Makes me think the ones they have shown are a lot better than the ones they've left out.

Looks like it could have lots of potential, although as others have said it's very close to a main road and that you can't change.

HoskinsChoice · 13/10/2025 17:47

Wow. How on earth have we got to a point where a bog standard, horribly dated, totally unloved house next to a main road and with only 1 bathroom is worth £700k?! I wouldn't give you £70k, let alone £700k.

TattooStan · 13/10/2025 17:57

It's a dream property, and that parquet floor!!

But I wouldn't want to be so close to the road. And if you've never done anywhere up before (we've done 3), be aware of how expensive materials are and how expensive and unavailable (and unreliable) tradesmen are now.

Hellohelga · 13/10/2025 18:00

I think it’s lovely but make sure you have the funds for the work.

Ruggerlass · 13/10/2025 18:07

It has the potential to be a lovely home, but for me it’s too close to the road, has only 1 bathroom and no driveway.

Nomoredamnmats · 13/10/2025 18:13

Four bedroom house with ten pictures, four of which are of the outside. I’d be very suspicious.

jeaux90 · 13/10/2025 18:13

I live about 6 miles from there. Come out and look round the area is my advice. And as someone doing up a grade 2 in the area right now I’ll tell you this is not a great location for getting materials dropped off and stored. I can’t see where they can park a lorry and offload dozens of sheets of plasterboard or insulation. If you are doing up a house you need to be practical. And yes you should do it, it’s amazing out here.

NotThisBollocksAgain · 13/10/2025 18:14

I think if either you or your husband is over 5'5 you are going to struggle....

ReplacementBusService · 13/10/2025 18:19

I have a history of falling in love with charming period properties and ignoring all of the red warnings on the surveys as being a problem for future me to deal with. 1) if it meets your needs get a survey from a proper surveyor not some paint by numbers person and read their report properly and consider if you have enough money 2) you don't want to have your baby on a building site if you can avoid it 3) will Google maps recommend people use your road as a cut through if the M40 is backed up?

Exactly my thoughts - what about all of the rooms that aren’t photographed? That money is insane for what it is - particularly if it is listed as it will cost twice as much to refurb.

ResusciAnnie · 13/10/2025 18:19

Meh. There are thousands of other houses exactly the same so it’s not got any interest for me IMO. Nothing special. Especially for £700k.

justasking111 · 13/10/2025 18:21

One loo in the main bathroom upstairs. Two small bedrooms, right on the road. It's a no.

MoominMai · 13/10/2025 18:21

DancingFerret · 13/10/2025 17:34

Same thoughts here. I guess maybe the road wouldn’t be too bad if it’s not that busy but who knows what the future holds what if some town planning results in more heavy traffic down that way in time?

Also agree about the low ceilings. Honestly I’m barely 5’ and my current house hasn’t got crazily low ceiling but they are lower than any other house I’ve previously lived in and I have to say I really don’t like it. Can’t quite articulate why as there’s no practical reason and if anything should be a plus for my short ass haha but yeah also the renovation costs would make it a regretful no for me as it does otherwise have potential I guess.
