Hello

I am a teacher I'm middle management. I'm considering part time next year but I'm slightly nervous about the money drop. Anyone done this and got any good tips? I'm considering 0.8 but I think I'd love 0.7 really
What are your top tips?

Cam you do other work in your spare time, holidays such as tutoring to make up the shortfall?

Have to looked at what difference it makes to your take home pay. Sometimes the way tax works means a 20% drop in hours doesnt equal a 20% drop in pay.

Yes I think I need a way of working this out.

Ask ChatGPT or copilot to work out the tax for you in the different scenarios it’s brilliant at it.

You’ll be fine. Cut your cloth etc. The average teacher salary is more than what DH and I earn and we both technically work part time (0.8). Do it! It’s done wonders for us.

on tes there’s a free resource where it works out the pay for part time workers. Here the link it’s been updated for 2025

Thanks so much for that TES link. I will definitely use that . I was trying to do the maths myself and failing!

I've recently dropped my hours to 80%.
To me it's not been to much of an impact financially. I had to cut back on some things but overall it's been liberating!
It depends on what you plan to do with the extra time. How much personal spend you really need and of course if there is enough money for contingency.

Just bear in mind the pension implications as well when you’re thinking about a salary drop

No worries, I’ve used it myself to work out whether to go 0.8 or not which I plan to in the next three years or so.

Thanks so much all. I think.0.7 or 0.6 is too much of a stretch but 0.8 seems ok

I do 0.8 and I daydream about 0.6. The drop in pension would worry me. I've not built it up for long enough and I started on more part time than I am.

Do not do any extra duties if you're 0.8. My experience as a lecturer is that I do more hours than some full timers because of my role but I making sure my teaching load isn't too high.

0.6 would be my dream if I could afford it.

Consideringparttime · 14/10/2025 20:23

I'm lucky as my pension is now not affected . I'll be really careful to keep my day off for my other ventures (I want to do a uni course)
