Hotel bumped us to another hotel at midnight!!

This has never happened to us before, can anyone shed light on it?

Me and some pals went for a girls weekend away. We booked and paid for our rooms months ago.

four of us on Friday night, booked into our hotel, two per room. We were joined on Saturday by two pals, and tried to check them in when they arrived, around midday, but were told the extra room wasn't ready yet.

So we all went out for the day, came back around 11pm - to be told the hotel was overbooked, our third room was no longer available and two of our party was now being moved to another hotel.

The staff on duty seemed utterly bemused that we were furious. As if we were being unreasonable. We suggested at the very least they cover our bar bill while we waited for the taxi to take our friends off to another hotel, but no, not possible apparently.

Anyone had this happen to them before, anyone shed any light?

Did the B&G complain? They should have been compensated.

Yes they did complain to head office eventually as the manager of the hotel was pretty much completely unapologetic. I'm not sure what compensation they got but I believe they did get something in the end.

When were the bride and groom told they’d be moving to a different town? Bloody hell must have taken the shine off

That's good. Some hotel managers are awful. I was awake until 2am at one hotel due to loud party music in their ballroom. I was in tears by then. When we complained to the manager, he said 'What did you expect in the Christmas party season?'. It was only when we complained to Head Office that we got some compensation (a free suite stay).

So all rather different tone to….

I know a bride and groom who were bumped from their hotel room on their own wedding night! The hotel were very matter of fact that they regularly over book, and they hardly even apologised. They had double booked the suite and the other party had checked in half an hour earlier, so that was that! It meant they ended up staying in a different town to all their wedding guests (we were all at the overbooked hotel).

🤭

No, not a different tone at all. They made the most of what could have been quite an upsetting situation and saved their complaints until after the honeymoon. You were inventing nonsense about guests not offering them our rooms, and forlornly waving them off at he end of the day from the original hotel, which wasn't the case at all. The hotel still behaved very badly in my opinion and were unapologetic, but the bride and groom accepted the suite in the other hotel (not they had any other choice!), and we waved them off nicely at the end of the day.

When were the poor b and g told they’d be moving? During the wedding? Now that would have been a photo

Honestly I think this might be the last time I ever bother posting on Mumsnet.

oh don’t be daft. Of course you’ll post again. Maybe under a name change but no way will you stop!

I was a supervisor at travelodge , they over sell rooms as they expect a certain amount of guests not to turn up , then it’s first come first served , as the person on the desk imagine how embarrassing it is to tell guests they’re off to another hotel and then have them kick off at you as if you’re the one who over sells them , trust me the staff do not feel good about it in fact numerous times I would call early in my shift and try and get them not to over sell when they wouldn’t listen I would put several rooms offline on purpose , and no head office don’t care about staff being abused over it.

It's quite common practice if guests haven't checked in by a certain time. We've had this too and ended up driving about 30 miles to their next available hotel (I think it was premier inn that did this to us)

They didn’t want the group getting even more pissed and rowdy

Don’t be silly, why are you making up rubbish? Hotels, over-book, like airlines. Then if you’re unlucky, you’re the one that’s moved,. It’s not OK and they should absolutely compensate impacted customers some way.

The hotel bar was likely closed at 11 anyway

So the group were likely asking not just for a free tab for the entire group (the cheek!) but also for the bar to reopen just for them

Why are you so obsessed with this?

Was it a Travelodge by any chance!? My husband was away in London with work and when they went to check in only 2 of the 3 rooms booked were available. They are renowned for over booking which is likely what happened to you and your room was no longer available. He had to sleep on the floor of a male colleagues room as they offered to put him up in another hotel over 40 mins away (this was at 1am in the morning!)

We were also booked in a Travelodge in Bristol and after travelling over 4 hrs to get there they called me earlier in the day to check if we still needed the room as they had overbooked 🙄
