Intense itchy legs making life of 18 year old miserable.

Hi, we’ve been to the dermatologist and GP about this already, nothing has helped so far. I’m wondering if anyone else has had this and what helped / fixed it?

My 18 year old daughter has intensely itchy legs. There is nothing on the skin, no visible rash or eczema, it’s an itch inside the leg. It’s affecting her life to the point she cannot do daily activities like college, work or going out with friends.

The GP has prescribed creams, but these don’t help as there’s no actual surface rash. She’s taken various antihistamines from both over the counter and prescription and this hasn’t helped either. We have changed washing powder and she’s improved her diet, that’s not helped either.

Has anyone had similar and how did you fix or help it?

Liver/ neurological condition/diabetes?

If there is no rash and topical creams don’t help then the doctors need to be testing for other things.

Going through a similar thing only its in my arms. G.p things it's an irritated nerves in my back. Awaiting an MRI. Was prescribed Neurostil and its been a game changer. Also look up pruritus

Can this be determined from blood tests? What should I be asking the GP for tomorrow morning?

Yes , iron levels as well

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 12/10/2025 17:57

Some conditions like anaemia and cholestasis can cause very itchy legs. I would research this and press with GP.

Turtles4543 · 12/10/2025 17:58

I had similar when i was that age. Homeopathy seemed to sort it but iron levels may have been an issue too in hindsight.

Boredonafridaynight · 12/10/2025 17:59

Get full blood count done, Vitamin B12 and d to rule out any sort of deficiencys. If thats clear then request an MRI

Did you go and see a homeopath?

Was her blood preassure checked? I used to get this when my BP was low.

Goodadvice1980 · 12/10/2025 18:01

B12 deficiency?

DoYouReally · 12/10/2025 18:14

I'm anemia and have had the same thing in the past.

Has she had full blood work? Sounds like iron deficiency/B12 issues. Is she very pale?

mugglewump · 12/10/2025 18:18

Ask for comprehensive blood tests. I have autoimmune hepatitis and itchy skin is an early sign of liver disease. I used to scratch my amrs and legs til they bled sometimes.

BookMama23 · 12/10/2025 18:28

Iron levels can cause intense itching, ask the GP to do a full blood work

Wishmyhousewasbigger · 12/10/2025 18:38

I have chronic spontaneous urticaria, I'm on 4 antihistamines a day and another couple of things.I have to moisturise twice a day with a cream which doesn't have any scented stuff in it. Does she get wheals when she scratches? Ask for a referral to an allergy clinic, my local hospital's dermatology department were useless.

It’s interesting you mention this as she had a test a couple of years ago and they said her liver function was medium which wasn’t ideal but nothing to worry about.

Her GP should order liver function tests. Not quite the same but itchiness in pregnancy is considered a significant symptom as it can be caused by cholestasis.

TheBlueHotel · 12/10/2025 18:50

Aquatic pruritis? I have this. I have to stay warm after a bath or shower, moisturise immediately and dry completely before putting on clothes, and avoid touching my arms and legs with soap or shower gel.

BlackSheepThisYear · 12/10/2025 18:50

I’m anaemia and I get this when my b12 injection is due again. Totally understand the feeling of itching but under the skin. It’s horrible and I feel for her.

DiscoBob · 12/10/2025 18:51

Liver damage, vitamin deficiency, anemia, diabetes can all cause insanely itchy legs with no rash. Hopefully she'll get a blood test to rule those things out.

dullgreysky · 12/10/2025 18:52

Does she shave her legs? Mine always used to itch after I shaved them.

nomas · 12/10/2025 18:55

I used to have itchy legs until I stopped using fabric conditioner. Are they using that?

Also try a sensitive washing powder. Boots does one.

MsTamborineMan · 12/10/2025 18:57

Has she had any bloods? She needs liver function, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies plus diabetes ruling out

Is it the skin that's itching or deeper? When she's lying down or standing or all the time? Is there a pattern with what she's wearing? Her skins not dry?

I get itchy legs when standing for long periods and wear compression stockings. Something like POTS?

We’ve been using an eco wash. She doesn’t shave her legs regularly. There’s nothing physically on the skin, which makes it trickier as there’s nothing to observe.

It’s all the time. It’s temporarily relieved by ice cold showers. She can’t do her daily normal life it is that bad.

Definitely get liver function checked. An increase in bile can cause itching.
