Traffic chaos at temporary lights

We have traffic improvement works by where I live.

As you approach the roadworks there is a sign stating to go towards town turn left and to go towards the city turn right. It's a t junction.

You can go straight on and turn right or you can cut across diagonally and turn right too. I assume this second option is for long vehicles like lorries, trailers or buses who can't make the right angled turn.

However, some drivers are going straight on then turning right and some drivers are going diagonally to turn right at the same time.

This obviously causes an issue where the lanes merge and as I travel this route twice a day I've witnessed a couple of near misses where drivers haven't realised there are two options and nearly collide. Am I right for thinking all traffic should turn right across the diagonal if they want to turn right? That's what most people including myself do.

Is the traffic management contractor negligent if there's an accident?

Should they not have put up a no right turn sign further down where I've written sign or would that have confused people even more??

I am positive there will be an accident soon. Luckily it will be a low speed accident as its a 30mph but even so. I think they've made a mistake but can't really work out how this could be fixed?

AIBU to think they've made a mistake with the traffic management?

I think you are right in that only one route should be taken as it’s an accident waiting to happen. But it’s hard to tell from your diagram which option is the correct one. And yes it should be signed more clearly either way as it’s causing confusion.

Looks like the drivers going diagnally are in the wrong.

Why? That's the route lorry's and buses have to go as the foward and then right turn is too tight an angle.

Its really bad planning.

So report it to the council.

Edited

Because you're not a lorry or bus.

Think it through. If there is a lorry and a car going through one after the other, they are not supposed to meet at the merge point. All vehicles coming from one direction and heading to another direction should be following the same path. The temporary junction will therefore have been designed for all vehicles turning right to use the diagonal path. The path across the top is for traffic coming from the left which would be on a different phase of the lights.

Phone the number on the board at the lights, or the council and tell them that there have been near misses. They will come out and reconfigure if necessary or put up additional signage.

You'd have thought so wouldn't you.

But as I explained on the light change some vehicles are going straight on and then right and others in the same queue are going diagonally right so are meeting at the merge point.

Sadly there's not a board.
I've contacted the Council but not getting anywhere.

There's nothing? It's a regulation that they have a board with emergency contact details. I'd keep on at the highways department at your council.

Are there not any signs there at all? They have to have the company name and an emergency/out of hours contact number on the back. They can get in a lot of trouble otherwise

HangryBrickShark · 15/10/2025 14:59

I'll take some photos later when we pas as partner driving

The company that put the temporary roadsigns out must have their name and number on the back of the signs.
Phone them and explain.
We've done it often enough.
