Surgical 'mishap'

Seven years ago, I had an inactive gastric band removed. The procedure was done at a private hospital but funded via the NHS. The whole operation was a catalogue of mishaps — including them writing the wrong procedure on my discharge notes and treating me post-op for a completely different operation! (But that’s a whole other story...) I was just grateful it was sorted and moved on.

Now, seven years later, I’ve lost weight, and it’s become apparent that they left part of the equipment behind. I have a piece of tubing, about 3cm long, over my sternum. I mentioned it to my GP a while ago, and she said it could have been scar tissue — it wasn’t very prominent at the time as I was heavier. But since losing more weight, it’s now clearly a piece of tubing.

I’m not entirely sure what my AIBU is here, and I suppose I should go back to my GP. But for now — does anyone have any wise words or similar experiences? I really CBA with another operation unless it's desperately necessary and I promise I'm not fishing for any sort of "sue 'em hun" type comments 🤣

You do really need to go back to your gp and get referred to determine if it really is left over ‘equipment’s you honestly can’t assume you know exactly what this is

@FlamingoFloss it's definitely a piece of tubing - it's only just under the skin and I can manipulate it/spin it round and feel the hole at each it's like a piece of macaroni! ... I will go back to the GP though, thankyou

Well yes go back to your GP. And even though you don’t want to sue them maybe get it checked out independently. If it does need to come out and is near the surface maybe it would be a relatively minor operation but still a further inconvenience to you. And possibly expensive.

Oh bless you. That’s not good at all. Please do go and get this checked - if it’s loose it could migrate to elsewhere in your body. Why are you losing weight do you think?

Isn't it obvious she's trying to lose weight!? She had a gastric band!

It's nothing to do with the gastric band, like I said it was 7 years ago. I actually had the gastric band 16 years ago

Thankyou 😘 ... nothing sinister, I've purposely lost weight.
