Claire’s Law

Friend of mine recently made a request about a family member’s new partner who the friend had concerns about. Within a few days police contacted my friend to say that they did have some information of concern. Police said they couldn’t reveal what it was as it was confidential, fair enough, but wanted mobile number for family member. Family member has now been in touch with my friend to say that yes the police have been in touch and told her my friend had made the request!!! Surely the whole point is that requests should be confidential to safeguard the person making it? Has anyone else had this experience?

I didn't realise you could do it on behalf of someone else.

I assume the person of concern was not notified, and that the family member was contacted without his knowledge?

Marshmallow70 · 12/10/2025 15:47

My friend is worried that the person of concern could now be told about the request by the family member.

That is a surprise! Has their family member taken appropriate action?

DiscoBob · 12/10/2025 15:52

So the potential abuser's family member now knows the friend did a Clare's Law? The police shouldn't be telling the subject or family of the subject who requested it. That's terrible.

Marshmallow70 · 21/10/2025 07:10

Friend has made a complaint to the police for what they feel is a breach of confidentiality. No, family member has taken no action…

Good job the police didn’t share confidential info with your friend…. She’d have at the very least told you OP!

WhataviewJ · 21/10/2025 07:14

The police will not have told the subject that the friend pursued the application.

The subject will have guessed

Amandasummers · 21/10/2025 07:19

it Is always a possibility that the subject of the Clare’s law request will be told about the request. Stupid and irresponsible, but true unfortunately

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 21/10/2025 07:20

It will be good to know what happened.

I suppose though, they didn’t tell the (possible) perpetrator, they told the (possible) perpetrator's potential victim.

And the friend hasn’t shared any confidential information with OP, just that she made a CL enquiry.

DNAwrangler · 21/10/2025 07:35

I doubt the police told her. She guessed and you confirmed…

Chiseltip · 21/10/2025 08:06

Yeah . .

No.

I think there's more to this.

Anditstartedagain · 21/10/2025 08:09

Me too. I’m surprised they told the family member that there were concerns.
