Doesn’t bother me tbh. If I’ve given something away it’s because I’d rather see it used by someone else, if they need to sell it then it’s up to them.

What I don’t like is when someone makes themselves out to be in dire need of the object then punts it on. When DD was little I gave away a huge bag of toys to a woman who appeared desperate to have them and was so grateful as her DD would have lots of enjoyment from them - was disappointed to see them up for sale on the same day 🤷🏼‍♀️

They'll make a few quid at most. Its quite a hassle. The person giving stuff for free doesn't want the hassle. If your going to the effort just for the odd pound, have at it. Consider it cutting out the middle man of donating to charity if it makes it easier to digest.

BantheQuo · 10/10/2025 22:58

It’s fine, as long as it’s not done duplicitously.

That's how I feel. If I want rid of things and can't be bothered with the hassle of selling them, I don't care if whoever takes them then sells them on.

SalamiSammich · 10/10/2025 23:00

Why would they absorb the cost and hassle of posting it at their own inconvenience?

Merryoldgoat · 10/10/2025 23:02

Who cares? You can give it away or sell it. Once it’s gone it’s no longer yours so it’s literally none of your business.

If you couldn’t be arsed to sell it that’s your issue.

Allswellthatendswelll · 10/10/2025 23:05

Do people do this that often?
I kind of think it's fine if it's under £10. Not much is worth that much you get on free cycle. I only give away stuff that has no value to me and would be worth a few quid at most.

Wonder where the line is as well- Is it OK to sell clothes you were given for free once your kids have grown out of them? I've definitely sold the odd hand me down if I thought it was worth something but 99% I just pass on. Is it OK to sell an unwanted gift?

Tagyoureit · 11/10/2025 08:49

1 person's rubbish is another person's treasure. If they have the time, patience and inclination to sell on the free things they find then fair play to them so if they're doing the work, why shouldn't they reap the rewards?

ShesTheAlbatross · 11/10/2025 08:53

Doesn’t bother me at all. I get rid of stuff on freecycle fairly regularly, and it’s not my business what someone does with it. I sell things that I think are worth it, but if I give stuff away it because I don’t think it’s worth the hassle of selling for a small amount. Someone else may disagree - that’s fine.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 11/10/2025 08:53

I'd rather people who were hard up had this as their business model rather than resorting to stealing to get by.

I see it as entrepreneurial and although I guess I'd prefer to see things used by the purchasers rather than as a bargain they could sell on for more money, if I'm selling on Vinted, if I'm happy with what they pay then ultimately it doesn't matter much.

Meadowfinch · 11/10/2025 08:55

I don't see any issue. The original owner wanted rid of it and couldn't be bothered with the hassle of selling it.

If someone else manages to make a few pounds, then great, let them get on with it.

TroysMammy · 11/10/2025 08:58

As I can't be arsed to have unwanted stuff hanging around and the hassle of putting it online to sell it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. After all you give unwanted stuff to charity shops who then sell it to make money. Same concept really and they say charity begins at home.

G5000 · 11/10/2025 08:59

It's fine, unless they lied to get the free items and the original owner only gave them the items because they thought the seller was in dire need for it. I have given away some items I would otherwise have sold because someone claimed they had to leave their home due to domestic violence and now have no clothes for their kids and no car seat. Would have been pissed off if they were just a re-seller.

Tigerthatcametobrunch · 11/10/2025 09:03

There's a lady in my local town that has made a very successful business out of doing a profit share with the original owner selling these kinds of things. I think that's much fairer and she can barely keep up with how many people want to donate through her.
