Anxiety 10yr old?

Fingerscrossed22 · 10/10/2025 22:41

Posting for traffic- apologies.

At a loss as to how to support or if there is a medical issue ?

My 10 yr old DS developed a sudden crippling stomach pain in January , he was asleep and it woke him (9 at the time)
I rushed to A&E as he was crying and bent over (Thought was appendix) , Dr diagnosed abdominal migraine.

It kept happening, more frequently.
Blood tests and a scan have revealed nothing.
We removed food groups , changed from tap water to bottle.
Nothing has made a difference.
Anxiety was a consideration too.

I'm still on the fence if its medical episodes or/and anxiety.

Ds has a stable, calm life (as much as a 10yr old with older and younger siblings can have !) He gets on with everyone, lovely school, teachers and friends. He is active and enjoys playing sport 2x a week as a hobby.
He gets on great with all in household.

He is getting stomach cramps twice a day- could be anytime.
Though, evening does seem to be a more common time .
He cries and is bent over in pain- lasting approx 20 mins.

The consultant is at a loss as is our GP.

Has anyone experienced similar?

Many thanks

Does he have any other symptoms of anxiety? I would be wary of doctors suggesting a psychological cause because they haven't got to the bottom of his physical symptoms. Is his consultant a gastroenterologist? Has your son had any problems with bowels/eating/reflux?

Not saying it can't be anxiety, just that any physical cause should be ruled out first. Are they referring him for psychological assessment?

@Endofyear , thanks for the reply.
It was a peads consultant.

No other refferal.
We live in a quite rural part of UK, I'd imagine the nearest hospital that has a more specialised department for gastro is about 2.5hrs away at the Bigger hospital.
But will definitely push for that department consultant.

No issues with diet/bowels .
I will be returning to GP on Monday to push further and for a psychological refferal too

Mesenteric adenitis?

I would obviously push for more medical assessment. Has celiac been ruled out?

But I would also placebo it. You've got to make it convincing though.

My 10 year old daughter is the exact same! I could of written this word for word!

I have taken her to so many doctors and specialists and nothing other then some raised lymphnoeds in her tummy have shown - but I have been told they wouldn't cause this reaction.

It's so hard to watch and not be able to do anything to help so my heart is with you

I'm by no means an expert but it really doesn't sound like anxiety to me, it sounds more like a medical issue. I think thr stomach pain from anxiety is generally more dull and lasts longer, his sounds more intense but for a shorter time.

I'm experiencing very similar with my 11 year old, I have suspected for a while that he has cyclical vomiting syndrome as his attacks usually end with intense vomiting - but they come in clusters (days/weeks apart) and the following few attacks are often 'just' the stomach pain on its own.
Excitement is his usual trigger, so before or after parties, trips etc. I have wondered if he is actually feeling anxiety linked to these events but I am leaning more towards CVS.

I've found this article helpful, there is a bit about abdominal migraines, which don't necessarily feature vomiting, perhaps this might be relevant?

Mesenteric adenitis?

Hi,
I've just looked up that, I can't say thats it - He hasn't had a fever or any of the symptoms really barr the stomach pain, which is all over the stomach, mostly centeral.
Ongoing really since Febuary.

Apologies I somehow missed the bit in your OP where you said he'd already had a diagnosis of abdominal migraine!

How is he doing?
To update my DS has been prescribed buscopan and it's had some success but we need to give it a few more weeks really, has your son tried it yet?
