To wonder if a vasectomy reversal is worth it at 40?

Both myself and DH are 40 and he had the snip prior to us meeting

We have been together 3 years now and would love a child

I’ve had all the checks and all looks fine but his vasectomy was 10 years ago ( he had twins with ExW ) so just wondering if there’s even a possibility this could work 😔

Has he done his research?

What did it come up with statistics-wise?

Ladymuffins · 10/10/2025 18:16

You might want to take the option of taking sperm from his testicles (minor surgery) and then go the IVF or similar route for you. Whatever you do, hope all goes well x

I obviously have no medical expertise whatsoever but surely if it’s reversed it’s reversed and it either works or doesn’t. Does the surgery reversing it become less likely to succeed because the tubes have been tied for longer? Go for it anyway! What have you got to lose?

Whichone2024 · 10/10/2025 21:35

DH and I also want a baby after he had vasectomy -
reversal sort of worked but the sperm had this sticky stuff around it which happens after a reversal and so they couldn’t get to the egg.
so we had ivf icsi where they washed the stuff from around the sperm away and then inject led the sperm into the egg and that worked for us.

NoMonNoFunx · 10/10/2025 21:37

Don’t go by statistics. There’s always a chance of a miracle 🫶

Thanks all

Bear in mind vasectomy reversal is not available on the NHS, and it’s unlikely you would get IVF on the NHS unless you actually have a fertility issue.

Yes, it does.

Not sure about 10 years - you'd best research it or get a specialist to advise on likely chance of success.

Hankunamatata · 11/10/2025 12:22

Id speak to specialist about cost of reversal versus sperm retrieval and ivf. Plus have yourself checked for fertility issues.

Derbee · 11/10/2025 16:55

My DP had a reversal after 15 years. It was successful (we have a toddler and I am currently pregnant again). But with the costs (we paid £7k over 5 years ago) and with your age, I’d assume that IVF with ICSI would be worth looking into. You could potentially start TTC much sooner, and would avoid wasting time with consultations, operation waiting times, recovery etc.

If you decide on a reversal, feel free to DM me for our surgeons info. I was part of a group here, and on another website and was the only success story that I ever heard of. I was 36, so not young for TTC.

Good luck.

CrazyCathy999 · 13/10/2025 11:27

I’ve had fertility testing and all fine so that’s why the reversal was suggested so we have more chances than we would if we needed to keep paying for IVF

Its just such a worry with time not being on side

My ex had a reversal. It was successful.

Do you know if it was a long time after the original vasectomy? Thanks

I’m guessing no longer than 5 years.

That's what friends did, but overseas. She had twins following insemination

remarkablecauliflower · 13/10/2025 18:19

My ex had a reversal after 17 years, our eight year old is sat next to me now! We had to go private, cost us about £2.5k. It really can happen OP
