Blood Pressure reading of 101/71

I went to my pharmacy for a flu jab today, prior to which they gave me a blood pressure check which read as 101/71. Im 40, a healthy weight and not on any medication.

I questioned if this was quite low and was told it looked 'all ok'.

AIBU to think that's actually quite low?

Seems normal to me.

mynameiscalypso · 10/10/2025 13:07

It’s fine - well within the normal range.

Moonless · 10/10/2025 13:07

It's fine I think. Mine was checked in hospital this morning, it averages about 113/79, today it was 109/71 and they said it was fine.
I'm 55 and 8kg overweight.

That’s a really healthy blood pressure, OP. Yes, it’s low, but having mildly low blood pressure is a good thing for your long-term heart health (and also for
your brain and kidneys). As long as you’re not becoming dizzy or faint when you stand up, it’s generally not a problem.

A quick google would tell you that yes that is good blood pressure. Why didn’t you believe them?

PegDope · 10/10/2025 13:07

It’s fine.

Starlight7080 · 10/10/2025 13:07

Had you eaten today? On any medication that may lower it ?
If you have a machine at home I would just randomly check it to get the average reading.
Usually at gp they do 3 reading if its high/low. Waiting a few mins in between .

Lougle · 10/10/2025 13:08

It's fine if you're asymptomatic and a bit low if you are symptomatic. Some people are perfectly fine with a systolic BP of 90 and others would be feeling dizzy and light headed.

If you want to increase your BP, try drinking more and make sure you have enough (but not too much) salt.

MummyNeedsCoffee1 · 10/10/2025 13:08

It’s in the ideal range. You can google for a blood pressure chart. But I’d also trust a health professional more than random strangers on MN

springintoaction2 · 10/10/2025 13:09

Its a normal BP

Whatwouldyoudoif · 10/10/2025 13:12

Thank you all, conflicting info online re what's considered normal vs not!

Wish mine was that !!

Lougle · 10/10/2025 13:12

Also, you need to bear in mind that all sorts can affect your BP in the moment. Is the cuff the right size? A large cuff will give a lower reading than normal. If the cuff is placed too low, the BP will read low. The height of your arm in relation to your heart. Whether you've been eating or drinking, exercising...

The NHS blood pressure chart puts yours well within the healthy range.

It's on the low side of normal but its very common for bp to fluctuate a lot within a range. Nothing to worry about unless you have other worrying symptoms.

TheSandgroper · 10/10/2025 13:37

In my very fit stage of life I was 110/65 for about 6 years running. Late twenties to early thirties.

FabulousFryingpan · 10/10/2025 13:44

Just beware, if you are in any way like me, that a hot shower will lower you BP even more and can make you feel quite unwell. But it may not be a problem in the morning for you, you would probably have known already.

Absolutely this. I have to shower in the evening, morning showers floor me. Although water temp does play a part.
