Birthday dinner ruined - restaurant refused eat free offer!

NC’d for this.

Birthday meal out at a local restaurant - they do an offer where the birthday person eats free as long as 1. It’s their actual birthday date and ID is provided to confirm and 2. There’s a minimum party size of 5.

It’s an all you can eat concept where food is brought to the table rather than you go and get it, a great deal as the food is lovely and the offer saves £30.

When we asked for the bill, we mentioned it was my birthday and I said I’d get my ID out of my bag. Someone came over (not the person we asked for the bill) and explained we were not eligible for the offer as only 4 of us had the all you can eat. My 2 year old DD was with us and obviously had a small meal (which we were to pay for).

My DH asked to speak to the manager - the person who came over said that he is the manager and refused to budge. We reluctantly paid.

We’ve checked the offer wording and it’s clearly stated it’s based on 5 dining (doesn’t specify it has to be the all you can eat) which we fulfilled.

It really soured the evening and we will not be returning which is a real shame as it’s a lovely restaurant, but they have been so underhand with this.

I think they probably mean five adults, but the Ts and Cs could be clearer.
It would have been a classy gesture if they'd explained this to you, allowed you the discount as a one-off and wished you a happy birthday. If that happened to me I'd definitely keep going back.
As it stands, though, while I think 'ruined' is a bit of an over-reaction, the restaurant behaved inflexibly and in a jobsworth way and I wouldn't be inclined to go back.

I think there's a good chance that the Ts and Cs may well be clearer, but as OP has only provided us with her paraphrased version we can't be sure.

Tessasanderson · 10/10/2025 09:45

You took the piss and they stood their ground. Move on and dont take it to heart.

A restaurant is not a charity and people like you are trying to hurt them.

KoiTetra · 10/10/2025 09:50

Wow the entitlement is strong with this one! IF the Ts & Cs are as you claim then the restaurant should have stated adult meals only but I think anyone with with any ounce of sense would know they meant any full paying adult.

OP either you and your partner have no common sense at all or you went in knowing it was an oversight on the restaurants part and were aiming to abuse the system. Either way you are an AH and should just caulk it up as a cheeky attempt that didnt work out. If you leave a poor review if I were the restaurant I would either be banning you or spitting in your food if you came back!

Mary28 · 10/10/2025 09:51

A 2yr old who's meal cost £5.
Right.
Yeah, leave a bad review for the restaurant, where the food is lovely.

My DH is going to leave a Google review this weekend. They’ve recently moved venue and won’t want adverse impressions for any potential new customers.

Ohhhhhh you’re THOSE people. How embarrassing.

Tessasanderson · 10/10/2025 09:53

You do realise that 99% of people that read your review will

  1. Get a really good idea of the offer and how good it is if followed honestly
  2. Get to see what a cheapskate you are and how you took the piss

Put up the name of the restaurant so i can add a reply in support of the restaurant. Times are hard enough without them having to get their leg lifted.

MILLYmo0se · 10/10/2025 09:56

I can't believe that even after reading all the replies here your DH is still going to go ahead and publicly (I'm assuming it's not going to be a sneaking anon review?) tell everyone you tried to include a 2 Yr old in the offer? It really won't be bad publicity for the restaurant OP, unless it's a v weak manager that's bows to any kind of nonsense, most of them will come out and blast back at the reviewer

DH is going to pen a suitably toned review this weekend, and I’m sure it won’t disappoint! My MiL says that restaurant usually replies to each review so it wouldn’t be a shock if on reflection, we get a voucher to settle the matter.

Edited

Is that what you want? A voucher?
Ok. I'm with pp, I don't think a toddler meal contributes to this kind of deal, but maybe they'll clarify it now on their website.

brunettemic · 10/10/2025 10:01

Can you send a I’ll to the offer? I’d like to see what the small print, that you presumably didn’t read, says.

Also…it ruined your birthday? Seriously?

I guess the mistake the restaurant made is assuming everyone has a modicum of common sense!

and decency!

True.

Catpiece · 10/10/2025 10:10

I don’t think it’d cross my mind to be so devastated over thirty quid. The offer was unclear but I wouldn’t have argued over it.

I’ve worked in retail all my life, and the amount of people who say I’ll never be back and you see them in again the next day 😂😂

I know someone who had a fallout with Tesco, about an almost out of date product, it culminated in them telling Tescos that they "would never shop there again!!"

After about a month he started going back occasionally, but he doesn't use his clubcard anymore so they don't know he's back!

You want to embarrass yourself even further?

Clearly.

You have a point here. Based on how they behave, surely toddlers aren't people?

It’s borderline!

BeLilacSloth · 10/10/2025 10:21

You go to a restaurant, you pay for your meal… it’s quite simple really.

If you can’t afford a meal out, then stay in. I’m sure the restaurant won’t miss scroungers like you.

Haha talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face!

LizzyEm · 10/10/2025 10:23

On what planet would you think a 2 year old would be included/count towards the 5?

Pretty gobsmacking, tbh.

Quite plus “all you can eat” is just trashy imo

Nobody would think that, would they? Five people dining would not include a toddler.

ThisLuckyOpalShaker · 10/10/2025 10:30

Honestly hoping this is a joke post 😂 cant believe someone would ruin their own birthday meal stressing over this.

How dumb can he be 😁. “I’ll show Tesco, I’ll still buy their products but I wont use my discount card, hehehe, that’ll learn them”.

Surely any rational person would know you would need five All you can eat’s on the bill to qualify or you could just have four of your mates sitting there just drinking coke and you can eat for free 🤦‍♀️
